Martyn – I’m so glad you asked this question, because I’m having the same problem. Gustavo’s answer doesn’t really help me; we don’t have any of those other programs. I’ve tried increasing the image size, and increasing the bleed value – but my problem remains the same: I’m restricted to 0.125 in.

Any help?

Are you sure that they don’t mean 1/4" total bleed, which would be 1/8 on each side? It’s highly unusual for any decent printer to ask for more than 1/8" bleed per side unless it’s an extremely unstable press (physically), but it’s also highly unusual that someone submitting an ad would not have Xpress or InDesign. If you’re just giving the Photoshop file to the printer, they are probably going to drop it into one of those programs just to image the plates, and they can add your bleed then.

While 1/8" is normal, you can often get by with less, especially when you are dealing with a good printer who can plan for the trimming.

If you are just going to just submit a PS file, all you really have to do is make that file 1/4 inch bigger all the way around and make sure nothing of any importance is in the bleed area.
