HIya Toobi Won…

Sorry for so many questions, but have another project….was given a ..pdf file from a designer…. I asked for original files so I can edit, and he told me the same as you.. open it in Illustrator, so I did, but the type doesn’t line up in some places etc….I am probably gonna ask him to send me the originals once again, but in any event, I can probably realign the type, and more so, here is my problem editing the text….
The file has a date of 2005 which appears knocked out of the graphic behind it…. alot of the type is on layers etc… I am not familiar at all with using layers or how to change the 2005 to 2007. I told my client I would play with it over the weekend because i gave him sorta good new when i told him it could be edited in illustrator. I can change the pricing on the brochure, but can’t figure out how to change the date on the graphic ( I know I need to figure out which layer its on and do magic there, but having trouble). I also told the client that if he could provide me with a new file, I can just delete the graphic and replace it with the new one….(the easy way out)
I guess what I am asking is if you could make necessary changes to the file if I sent it to you if I need to…(depending on the clients decision to change that portion of the brochure)
I will try to get the original files again from the graphic designer, but he seems to be hard to deal with….

What happened to the original he sent you? You did make a copy of it and worked on that didn’t you……..?

Google for Illustrato+layers.

You "blagged" it as we say. 🙂

I can change the pricing on the brochure, but can’t figure out how to change the date on the graphic

The date on the graphic will probably be part of the graphic and therefore rasterized.

I know I need to figure out which layer its on and do magic there, but having trouble). I also told the client that if he could provide me with a new file, I can just delete the graphic and replace it with the new one….(the easy way out)

I could cast an eye over the file.

Well, the guy that designed it also printed the brochure….My client (and his) wants me to print it this time around, so my client asked for the file to be sent to me. Well, he sent a pdf file…. I tried to open it in INdesign, which can not be done, but like you said I also tried to open it in illustrator, but when I do, some of the aligned type opens as not aligned anymore, which another printer told me I was looking for trouble with a pdf file…even they won’t work with it, they want the original file. Anyway, I was trying to figure out the layers with the date on the graphic so that I can change it, but I honestly have never used illustrator, and actually only used photoshop a few times, and indesign only a few more times. I am not the graphic designer I would like to be… I can do simple stuff in Indesign right now, but most files come to me ready for digital output, so I don’t have to fool around with them at all.. just output to plate… I think I really need the original files so that I won’t have to deal with the misalignment thing… who knows what else will go wrong in illustrator with this pdf file….and on top of that, it is missing two fonts to boot, so it substituted similar ones….
I will try one more time to ask for the originals from this guy… not sure what he will do though…I won’t be in the office until tuesday either…

OK.. enjoy your weekend… don’t worry about me….

Thanks for the link….. this layer thing is really greek to me….on top of being new…..I think I need to be in a classroom environment to really understand them…. I do have the classroom in a book series, for illustrator too…. i am not even done with the indesign one yet… photoshop was next, but i stopped reading about 6 months ago….I really don’t use design software for much…. files are usually sent to me ready for output…. ugh….

Fwed,

Do you know what format the original file is in? PDF’s are normally sent when the sender doesn’t want any changes to be made to the file.

Layers are a piece of cake. Think of an animator who has a background on one cell; middle distance on another and the foreground on another. He can change the elements on any one of the layers without affecting the others. When you open an image in PS, it opens on a background layer; if you want to work on the image, you dup this layer so that if you screw it up, you can just blow it away and recopy the background layer again. If your manipulations include colour changes you can add an adjustment layer which works like a non-destructive filter over the pixels on the layer(s) below. If you then want to add text to the image, usingthe text tool will add a text layer to your image and so on.. see 12 at

I don’t know what the original format of the files are in as I have never seen them. I think the guy who designed it knows that you can’t make changes to pdf files….I also think he doesn’t want to lose any of the work, so this is why he sent pdf….My client paid for his work, so he is entitled to the files…. its just since i think he knows whats up, he is giving him a hard time about giving them up….
OK… I have saved the link to read at a later time…. its getting late, and we just got back home from shopping…I know layers are good for different things such as objects, text, and say graphics that are vertical instead of horizontal. InDesign touches a bit on layers… i would assume they work the same way in any other software. I just have not worked with them nor do I know when to use them. I mean I would use them for different text colors and logos etc, but some people tell me to put it all on one layer since its just type of different color.
I guess everyone has their own way of doing the same thing….which can be a good thing….there are alot of options in InDesign…

Oh.. i have made a copy of the pdf file….. but I would really like to edit the original if i can…

Have a great weekend Toobi!!! I will talk to you towards the end of next week…
