I’m intending to buy the new (Aldi) computer and was wondering whether 1GB RAM is sufficient on a machine with Windows Vista Home Premium pre- installed? Do you really need more memory or should 1GB do the trick? Thanks for your reply

Most recommendations seem to advise the following, 1GB minimum and 2GB recommended.

Nice computer btw! I might go for that one myslef soon.
I gig of ram is okay for Vista, but for Vista running CS, you should maybe think about 2 gig as a minimum spec.,.
Your machine is fast enough in every other way.

I’d say 2gb minimum, up to 3gb. The 32-bit OSes impose a 4gb RAM limit anyway. I would not recommend using Vista 64-bit at the time. Microsoft doesn’t seem to care about pushing 64-bit computing, and Adobe feels the same. In fact, if you have a choice between Vista and XP Pro, I would urge you to choose XP. That is, unless you will be purchasing CS3. There are some (mainly small) issues with CS2 and Vista, and Adobe says that they won’t be supporting it or releasing patches. Be prepared for the little annoyances.

I’m putting up with it, and I’ve made many tweaks to Vista so that I could deal with it. If MS offered downgrades to XP Pro from Vista for everyone, I’d take advantage of it. I looked into it and found out that owners of Enterprise and Academic Select (or some name like that) can get XP downgrades through MS, and that OEM owners are supposed to be able to get it through their system manufacturers.

Vista is pretty, and one day it will be patched up and be all that it’s been hyped up to be.

So, I’d say the same as the other guys. If you plan on having Vista as your OS, and using Photoshop CS, do yourself a favor and get 2gb RAM or more. Just the OS uses up plenty of resources. I have 4gb RAM, Windows Mail, IE7, WMP(nothing playing), and only a few things in the system tray, but according to the Resource Monitor, 37% RAM is being used. All my design apps then have to take a part of what’s left.

Anyway, good luck with your computer shopping!
