Mike, you can very easily and quickly do this yourself. In PS, select the Magic Wand tool, uncheck "Contiguous" in the Options Bar, and click on the white background. That should select all the white pixels. If not, play with the Tolerance value and try again. Tap the Delete or Backspace key to erase the white areas to transparent. Press Ctrl-H to hide the marching ants so you can inspect the result. If needed, fine-tune the selection by clicking Select>Modify, then Expand, Contract, or Smooth. If your image has a white background layer below it, uncheck its "eye" in the Layers palette or just delete the layer and save the file.

Read the following, for wicked quick and easy, and a free tool you’ll be glad to have on your workbench:

Then you need to save/export in a format that supports transparency (I suggest PNG).

The problem with the image you have hosted is the smudged edges that are the result of over compression with JPEG. This introduces blotchy grayness where the black and white abut each other.

Wanna see how badly?

ALT + Double-click on the Background to promote it to "Layer 0".

Create a new layer underneath Layer 0 and fill it with a medium-dark color, say a dark brick color, for example.

With Layer 0 highlighted in the Layers Palette, Click on the "Circle ƒ" icon at the bottom, and choose "Blending options…"

When the dialogue window opens, look toward the bottom. In the "Blend If…" panel, grab the right-side split triangle widget in the top "This layer:" scale.

Very slowly, drag that widget toward the left.

See all the junky stuff around the black objects?

That’s showing you the white areas that aren’t completely white. That’s the schmutz that results from heavy JPEG compression.

Reply back after you have done those things. I have more stuff for you to try.

Well, then I guess you’re SOL, eh?

Which begs the question: Why aren’t you asking your friend to do this, or why isn’t s/he asking the questions here?

Doesn’t seem too practical for us to instruct you, when you can’t do anything we might suggest, now does it?

I suggest your friend might want to recreate the object using vectors, anyway. It”ll be much cleaner that way.

I just did…took me about 5 minutes.

So, what are you saying, the dude works 24 hours a day? Cut me a break.

By the file name "eyesai.jpg" it appears he may have done this in Illustrator originally.

Have him export from Illustrator as a transparent PNG.

Should take all of 1 minute, tops.

I’m here to teach, not to do work for free.

Let me clue you up, then.

I don’t use IrfanView because I use Macs.

But, 2 minutes on the IrfanView site tells me that it will allow you to use Photoshop-compatible filters. The first link I pointed you toward has a free plugin that will do what you need.

You could have discovered that just as easily yourself.

Can you take it from there?

I hope so.
