I just installed CS2 on a new HP machine with Vista, 2GB RAM, all the bells and whistles. When I attempt to open a file, either by using file/open, or by using "Browse", it takes a good 5 minutes to open the file – even if it’s just a 10kB jpg. It only seems to do it the first time I try to open a file during a session – subsequent file openings work as expected. I’ve verified that my scratch disks are not on the primary drive. It’s a new machine, and performs perfectly in every other way, and is lightning-fast.

Any ideas?

There are some compatibility issues with CS2 and Vista. The fix for these problems is going to be released later in April. Look for the update it is called Photoshop CS3. Adobe will not be updating CS2 to work fully and correctly with Vista.

Do you have any kind of anti-virus installed? I’m running CS2 on Vista and haven’t seen any speed problems opening files.

Thanks for the feedback. I do have Norton Internet Security installed, but I tried disabling it, with the same result.

Also, I bought an HP scanner yesterday, and when I scan something, it does the same thing – the scanner runs, but it takes a good 10 minutes for the image to appear in CS2. But it’s only the first time I scan during a session. Then next time I scan, it only takes a couple of seconds.

Will the CS3 release be a free upgrade, or will I have to buy it? I just shelled out $200 for CS2, so I hate to have to turn around and buy another copy.

I’m baffled…

It’s a new version, not a patch, so you will have to purchase.

I am experiencing this same problem with CS2. It occured out of no where. The initial creation of a graphic or opening of one, causes photoshop to sit for about 10 minutes. It finally opens and then creating or opening any additional files, works fine. Any ideas?

The usual cause of that is that Photoshop is looking for a resource that isn’t present, such as a Network printer or files in the recent files list that no longer exist at the correct location on a Network.

Hi, opening files in Photoshop on my system takes approximately 120 seconds, even its a 1 x 1 pixel new document. Apart from this single, isolated, annoying problem photoshop works fine.

I’ve surfed through a number of forums and no-one seems to have a solution. I’ve deleted preferences files, defragmented the hard drive, a number of actions within my rights as a sub-ordinate. I’m on a network but the problems seems to be local, as no other adobe software on other computers on the network are effected. On some days, this problem dousn’t appear, and photoshop open files as normal. This issue occurs about 50% of the time, although recently its been happening three days in a row.

BTW, when i talk about photoshop, I mean Illustrator and InDesign as well, although Photoshop seems more severely effected. I’m on a PC, Pentium (R) CPU 3.00 GHz, 2.39 GHz, 0.98 GB of RAM.

This issue has a half-way serious effect on my work flow. Any ideas?

Hey there, now that I’ve had my rant, does anyone think that Adobe Activation may interfere with the functioning of Adobe Software? The Adobe Suite here seems to require persistent activation, perhaps this is the cause of the problem. Cheers, Tim

Did you try what Len mentioned in #6? Make sure your default printer is not a networked printer, and in PS, delete the list of most recently used files.

That worked. Brilliant! Thanks very much.

Tim, thank you for the feedback. That network printer problem bites a lot of people, as does the MRU files problem. Photoshop may be the only program on the planet that doesn’t handle it smoothly, so it’s not the first thing one would think of as a solution.

I have Vista Business and just got PS3 Extended. I was having the issue of it starting up real fast, but then taking forever to open a document or create a new document. I changed my default printer to a non-networked printer, and it worked! Now, can someone tell me why the hell Adobe cares about the printer when opening/creating a document? Why can’t it wait until you want to print something… i do web work, so I rarely print stuff. But now I can’t just click the fast print icon in any application cause it’ll go to the wrong printer…

I have CS3 and Vista with 3G Ram and have also found opening files very slow ..about 30 seconds. I have Avast antivirus and when I switch it off files open in 5 seconds. I have found the anti virus also causes printing errors.
