I send a lot of photos out on a sale or return basis, and I’m sure a lot of the photos are illegaly scanned. I read recently that Photoshop can detect unauthorised attempts to scan or photograph banknotes. Is this technology available to prevent unauthorised scanning of copyright material?

Vincent,

With some effort you can prevent a scanning device to scan some sort of material, but can’t prevent a photo to be scanned. If you can look at the photograph it can be copied.

It is therefore better to sent small/low res as samples, and send the real ones after a deal is made.

Read the following Wikipedia article, Vincent.

You may be able to incorporate the EURion Constellation into you images:

That is why god created contact sheets. Small worthless images (from a stealing them stand point) but good enough for customers to pick out anything they want and buy copies of.

This is for school photo packages – contact sheets and proofs involve extra trips to the school and extra processing time, which is why I’d like a tech solution.

Thans for the link to the EURion article Phos.. no luck unfortunately – there must be something else in addition to the symbol 🙁

Even if you use something like EURion Constellation, the software has to be compliant. You can scan any banknote if you use old software.

Contact sheets or full size images with a big fat "don’t copy" watermark in the center are the only reliable way to go. All other technological tricks can be bypassed.

For in image watermarks I am sure photoshop can do it along with xara, Pixview, …

The question asked is profound and the answers already given are equally so with a strong dash of pragmatism.

The important thing to remember with things like this and this applies to putting images on the web. Where there is a cheap @ss SOB there is a way. If someone has no life then they can spend hours or days of their lives fixing an image that has a DO NOT COPY on it. Or, anything else for that matter. Fortunatly these people are few and fare between and since most when they are doing these kinds of things do eat, drink, or go to the bathroom they die off rather quickly! 🙂
