TIFF File size

I have a panorama at 266M, 16 bit RGB. Saved as .psd, the file size remains 266M. Saved as TIFF LZW, it jumps to 327M.

But saved as TIFF, NO compression, it is 266M.

What gives? The file is flat, no alpha channels, clean as a bean.

LZW encoding does not work well with 16-bit data.

Try ZIP encoding instead

I use TIFF for convenience in other apps. I really don’t care if the file is the same size as .pdf, but certainly do not want it larger!

I seem to remember a similar topic a couple or more years ago. What I remember was something to do with the combination of lzw compression and 16 bit per channels that were really just 10, 12, or 14 bpc files padded up to 16 bpc. In those situations, lzw will yield larger files, but zip will give you a smaller file. Better yet, use psb, which for some reason, makes layered files much smaller than zipped tiffs.

Actually, I meant .psd, not pdf.
