How do you create a template / border so you don’t work outside of your work space? I see people have templates for DVD cases and CD cases, but I’m not sure how to make a template to protect areas I am working with… especially areas different from existing templates.

Thanks!!!

I’m new to photoshop, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use the Rectangular Marquee tool to drag a selection over the area you want to be able to brush, clone, or whatever. Any pixels outside the selection will be protected. If you mean you want to protect the area inside the selection, press Ctrl-Shift-I or from the menu, click Select>Inverse. You will then see another line of "marching ants" around the border of the image; that will let you work only on pixels from the borders inward to the original rectangle.

If you find the marching ants bothersome, press Ctrl-H to toggle them off. To disable the selection entirely, press Ctrl-D, or just drag a new one.

Of course, you are not limited to using the Marquee; you can use any selection tool you like. I suggested the Marquee because it lends itself to the rectangular shape of CD images.

Also look into layers. Once you have built the template, you can lock the layer(s) it is on.
