A non-destructive crop?
I don’t know if Photoshop caters for it though.
Maybe one of the Photoshop experts will confirm one way or another?
Select the area you want to keep. Invert the selection. Delete.

Robert, forgive me if I don’t understand your comment… but it sounds like your advice is for protecting areas on the same layer. I don’t want to damage layers below the layer I am working on. If I am incorrect, and your suggestion will protect my bottom layers and only remove pixels from the image I am working on, how do I invert the selection?
Thx
Or make your selection and turn it into a layer mask (in which case you don’t need to invert it)
I have tried to invert using Shift-Ctrl-I and Shife-Ctrl-L (just to make sure I got the right one) and no results. I hold them and hit enter and the background still get cropped. Please help.
You can always use the Select Menu to Invert your selection if the keyboard shortcuts are too complicated or don’t seem to work. There’s a command there for inverting. It sort of sounds like you are trying to hold those keys down and hit the delete key at the same time. It’s two separate operations. Invert, then Delete. However, there’s even a better way to do what you want that will give you the option of undoing your crop if you get it wrong or just want to change it later. It’s called a Layer Mask, and it lets you do basically the same thing but it hides the pixels rather than deletes them. It’s what most people use to do what you want. Read about them in the Help menu or your Photoshop manual. Good luck.
Thanks for the help everyone! I’ll try your suggestions. Haven’t yet b/c I was out of town….. I’ll get on it soon!
