Why images/pics are pixilated?

I am using screen captures from my DVX-100a (24 fps camera) as pictures for a project I am working on. I don’t understand why the pics look pixelated when expanded to 1/4" the size (or larger) of my monitor. These are Tiff files (not compressed when saved, no degrade in quality). The DVX-100a shoots fantastic footage. The images look great when projected on a movie screen, which is huge compared to my computer monitor, but why do they look bad in photoshop?

Thank you for your thoughts!

And what percentage are you viewing at?

Are you resizing the images, or just zooming in? What are the pixel dimensions of your images?

All great questions I wish I currently had the answers to! Sorry guys, I’m at work and won’t be able to answer most of those questions until I get home.

I do know the pic looked pixelated when I expanded (dragged the boarder to make the size of the picture larger/smaller) the pic. I don’t think zooming in made a difference on the quality of the pic.

If I’m not mistaken the DVX100a (my camcorder) shoots in: 720×576

Horizontal Resolution: 490 lines

Oh, btw the pics didn’t look pixelated when I got them to the size I wanted, but they shouldn’t look pixelated (unless I did something wrong) when I expanded them to 1/4th-1/2 the size of the screen…. .I say/assume this b/c they are great when played on tv (as footage).

Thanks for the help guys. I’ll get more info to you asap!

You are much closer to the screen image that to the projected image. Hence, any pixelation is much more obvious on the monitor than on the movie screen.

Motion forgives a lot more than still images
