My understanding is that, with the release of CS3, Adobe are limiting how many versions back you can use for the upgrade – I think you’ll need CS1 as a minimum to qualify for the CS3 upgrade.
It may be worth buying a CS2 upgrade now, which you can upgrade to from v6, and then, because you’ve bought CS2 after the CS3 announcement, you should be able to then get a copy of CS3 free.

No, it’s PS 7 Klaas.
Thanks John, I couldn’t remember if it was two or three versions back.
If I am not mistaken, Adobe will have upgrade paths for older software, but at higher prices. It might be worth phoning customer service to find out if this is true, and how much more it will be. Then you can decide if it is cheaper to buy CS2 and upgrade, or to upgrade directly.
The CS2 upgrade now will get you a free copy of CS3. It’s a no brainer.
Bob
That would be true Bob. I hadn’t thought of that.
AFAIK, that’s how it works. Of course, I’d order it directly from Adobe to be safe.
Bob
Can one still buy CS2 from Adobe?
Yes. CS3 hasn’t shipped yet
Bob
I ordered my Photoshop CS3 upgrade as soon as I saw the announcement. There was also a facility on the UK Adobe shop to order an upgrade to the previous version but this seems to have gone now.
After seeing Bob’s advice I decided to upgrade Illustrator 9 to CS2 and take advantage of a free upgrade to Illustrator CS3 but the option also seems to have gone from the UK Adobe shop just like it has for Photoshop.
It may be just that I made a mistake and missed it so any advice would be appreciated.

after reading your post ken, i just went and upgraded my illy 9 to cs2 on adobe’s uS store. like you the store only showed cs3. i had to log into my store account, then in the SEARCH BOX type in "illustrator cs2 store". and up popped a link to order the cs2 upgrade. i did and it went though fine. and i just hung up with customer service who confirmed that since i’m within the time between announce and ship of cs3, all i need to do is call back and pay shipping (6 bux US in my case) to get a free cs3 upgrade after the release.
you saved my bacon there bud. hope searching in the adobe.uk store helps you out!
dave
Hi Dave,
I am glad you have got your upgrade and I will take your advice and do some more searching on the UK site.
Many thanks for your help.
Regards,
Ken
good luck ken. you need to specifically search for "illustrator cs2 store" (no quotes) in the search box from WITHIN the adobe store. when i just put in "illustrator cs2" i got hundreds of support links but nothing from the store. when adding the word "store" the 1st link that popped up was the "purchase illy cs2" page.
good luck and thanks for waking me up. i had intended to do this anyway, but it had slipped my mind and i’ve no doubt i would have forgotten until after cs3 shipped and i was S.O.L.
dave
Well, you have always upgraded to the suite…and gotten the extended version. 😉
Bob
i’ll be getting the extended vers. of ps anyway. <cough> ripoff <cough> <cough> 😉
I always did want to play with the auto sketch feature of illy cs(2-3) anyway. maybe someday i’ll actually have a real use for it! 🙂
Hi Dave,
Well I tried what you did on the US site and every time I get sent back to the UK shop with only CS3 as an option, which I can’t order as I have version 9 like you.
It would seem that the special relationship between our countries does not mean much to Adobe as we pay far more for our software and don’t seem to enjoy the good treatments you good folks get.
Sorry for venting but I have bought every version of Photoshop since version three, every version of Premiere from 4 to pro 1.5, Live motion , which was ditched and GoLive 5 and 6 and it seems the future of that is in some doubt and not even a competitive upgrade offer.
Forgot about Audition which I have had since the early days of Cool Edit. Version 2 never even had a bug fix release! Who knows what the real future is of that now that it has been dropped from the suit.
I have now retired but I spent most of my working life in IT and have always been honest and bought all my software and always will but I can’t help wondering who the fool is when I see how we are treated.
I lecture on Photoshop and Photoshop Elements to Camera Clubs and do it all free as a hobby and have never made a cent from Adobe product but that is my choice. I have lost count of the people who have purchased Adobe products as a result of my demonstrations and recommendations over the years. If I can’t upgrade my Illustrator 9 that will be the last straw.
Sorry again for the rant which was obviously aimed at Adobe and not you Dave but this is the first time I have felt this strongly about this sort of thing and a number of issues seem to be coming to a head. In the cold light of day I am sure I will feel rather stupid for posting this but writing it has sure made me feel better in the short term.
Best regards,
Ken
p.s. I will call Adobe on Monday in the hope that they are sympathetic!

no worries. i’m totally with you. very unfair!
crap! i just checked amazon.co.uk for you and they have illy cs2 upgrade in every language BUT english! grr! i’d be pissed too. do you HAVE to order through adobe to get the free upgrade, or is it fine if you just show the rcpt within the valid time frame? that’s what i’d ask adobe.
see if you can order it over the phone (the customer service line should have an option to buy software, the us line – 888-724-4508 – did). barring that ask if you get the cs2 upgrade elsewhere, can a dated rcpt for cs2 be used to get the free cs3 upgrade.
good like ken.
dave
Acording to the Adobe web site, you can upgrade from 7 or later. They still sell CS2, so you can upgrade from 6 to CS2 and later to CS3.
I hope this helps,
Mike
