Hi All,
This is my first thread on this forum so here goes.
I have three computers all running CS2, one 2000 os, two xp os. All of the computers are filled with 2 gigs of ram, lots of scrach space on separate drives on each, and CS2 is configured the same on all systems.
On one of the systems (xp) when I open any image file (any format/any size) The "show scratch sizes" view in the image bar is excessively large! The same 5.25 psd image on my other systems show:
scratch 80.2m/1.62g
This system shows:
scratch 581.6m/1.62g ?????
Also on start up the first scratch disk is 508 megs.???

All of my systems have the page file for windows on a different partition on the HD and set to a static size of 4 gigs.
All of the computers photoshop scratch disc spaces are on different partitions than windows (C drive) or page file for windows (D drive).
This computer is XP. Also free space on this computer is huge ( over 300 gigs on first scratch disc partition).
The other 2 computers are Win 2000 pro and XP
All CS2’s are set the same in preferences.

My System:
Windows xp media ed.
Intel 975 Motherboard & 975 Chipset
Intel Quad QX6700 factory overclocked @3.20
2- gigs ddr2 667
500 gig HD. Raid 0
ATI 1950 crossfire 512 gddr4 single card
320 gig Free scratch on E drive start up
75 gig Free scratch on D drive

Found a patch on Adobe (scratch disk is larger than expected) Did not work!

Re installed 3 times
works on re install untill you set preferences. Then you can do nothing!

If anyone can suggest a fix I will stop pulling out my hair!

Sorry for the long post
Thanks!
Frank

Is there a problem running CS2 on any of these machines?

Photoshop reserves the amount of space it thinks it might need for scratch. This is based on a number of factors. It doesn’t mean your file has actually grown to that size on the scratch disk the minute you open it.

It can, of course grow very large when you consider that every operation you perform on an image creates a new history step to be held in scratch. Possibly one computer has more History States selected in Preferences than the other, so it’s grabbing more breathing space?

Best advice is to just concentrate on your image and forget about the numbers. 😉

Thanks Chris,
Unfortunately I know these things allready.
The problem is not the scratch disk space (I have a ton of that)it is the INSTALLED RAM being used that is the problem.

Both of the other computers are configured the same including photoshop (all preferences- scratch disks sizes- histories- pre-set manager)and Windows.

These Two computers only use 75-82 megs ram to open and hold an up to 20 meg image on the screen in photoshop nothing else done to the image.

With 1.62 gigs ram available in photoshop, I am using over 500 megs (one third)of my ram just to start on this computer. I have confirmed that that photoshop is using that much ram by viewing the efficiency setting in the image window. It stays at 100% untill the scratch shows it’s at 1.62 gig. then I’m into scratch disk on my drives.

That is a lot of wasted headroom that I could use before I have to purge some of the history.

I tried to resize my windows paging file up and down to see if that helped "No Joy"!

I’m stumped???

Thanks!
Frank

Lower your RAM allocation to 50%

….and raise the Windows paging file to max = min = 4GB.

This Adobe Tech Note is useful in explaining how Photoshop uses/allocates/releases RAM: < http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=3200 05>

Interesting Development:
on a 512k image
Lowering the ran allocation to 50% droped the scratch to 130 megs! Rasing the same to only 60% shot it back to over 500 megs? Anything from 60% to 100% exactly the same scratch 500 megs! Both of the other computers are set at 90% with no problems! Only a 80 meg usage in scratch (same image)with a 512k image.

Somthing is killing my headroom.

p.s. I have already read this link "Thanks"

Thanks for Trying!
