Whenever I paste an object from Illustrator to Photoshop, usually around the point Photoshop tries to rasterize the graphic, the entire computer freezes or shuts down immediately. There’s no application error or BSOD– it just completely dies.

Important Notes:

– Both Illustrator and Photoshop are perfectly stable aside from this problem. There are no random crashes or freezes. No other behavior in either application appears to result in a freeze/crash, with an occasional exception occuring when creating custom brushes. However, when pasting from Illustrator, it freezes like clockwork.

– I had this problem since I originally installed Photoshop and Illustrator CS. The problem persisted when I recently upgraded to CS2, and persists even after updating Photoshop CS2 to 9.0.2.

– I’m running a Windows XP Service Pack 2 PC with 2 GB RAM and a 2.3 GHz AMD CPU.

– My scratch disk is set to a non-boot drive with 232 GB available.

This error is DESTROYING my ability to work from home and every fix I’ve attempted has failed. PLEASE help salvage my Adobe software from near uselessness (since I heavily use Illustrator and Photoshop together and rarely separately).

Thanks.

More system info is needed. It’s very likely that you have bad hardware somewhere that’s being taxed by Photoshop. Bad RAM is my first thought but it could be just about anything else.

Bad video driver or BIOS are also outside possibilities.

In addition to Bob’s reply, what happens if you drag ‘n drop from Illustrator, or open or Place an Illustrator file?

It’s all the same– the problem appears to occur when Photoshop attempts to rasterize vector data, so whether you’ve pasted a smart object, or opened an EPS file (or whatever), everything is fine until the point at which actual pixel data is generated from the vector data.

As for system specs, I’ll be pulling my system open tonight to get more low-level details– any particulars you think might help us zero in on this?

Thanks,

One other thing to check, or to turn off, might be any virus protection or system firewall programs you’re running. A good program might vet stuff being cut-and-pasted through the clipboard and that could cause some problems.

Within Photoshop you can always get an overview of the system by going to Help > System Info… and copying the result.

Delete your serial number and all the standard plug-ins and you can post it here.
