Is there any functionality diffrence between CS2 Student Edition and ‘normal’ editions. It looks like I need to buy a new product.

No. There might be a few extras such as fonts that aren’t included.

CS3 is now shipping.

I currently have CS …. my thoughts are I buy CS2 can get a reasonable deal on the Student Version, and this includes free upgrade to CS3 ….

It is cheaper to buy the student version than the upgrade.

But now that CS3 is shipping it may be harder to find CS2.3 educational. Better Hurry.

It will work (as long as the reasonable deal is not a eBay special). I got the version 7 suite (the one before CS) after CS had been announced, and got a free upgrade to CS. Got the free fonts too.
