Grey Scale is not grey scale?

Does anyone know why my Grey Scale images open up in sepia tones? I am running windows 2k with a dell m992 monitor. Photoshop 6. It only happens with grey scale images, they appear in a purplish tone. In looking at my color settings everything appears fine.
