Hi,
I am using PhotoshopCS2 for a while and several months ago I switched to a new PC (DuoCore2 with 4GB on WindowsXP)
Since I am on this machine, I have frequent blues creens when working with Photoshop. Hardware and all that stuff has been checked, everything seems to be okay.

The crash mostly occurs when trying to open a file – result is blue screen (Page fault in nonpaged Area, 0x00000050)
After rebooting I normaly can open the very same file without problems. I couldn´t´t find a reason for this behavior. Sometimes I can work a week without problems, sometimes I get three blue screens on day. The only repeatable fact is, that this happens during File->Open->Select File and click open->crash.

I haven´t found a solution in knowledgebase or faq so far 🙁

BSODs are almost always diagnostic of a driver problem. Could be a video drive, mouse driver, etc.

could very well be problem ram, or a video driver. if you update the vid drivers and it still happens start removing ram to see if you can isolate it.

The creens had the blues on one of my boxes recently – and with the very same Page Fault error.

I don’t want to be the bringer of bad news, but after trying everything else only a new mother board solved the problem.

Well, the hardware was checked and no problems occured. Driver problem, perhaps – but what driver problem could it be, if it happens with Photoshop only. And only when opening a file?

Photoshop is likely to be the most resource intensive application on your system. My mother board fault only ever showed itself whilst Photoshop was running.

checked by who and how? actually swapping out components? that’s about the only reliable way.

like i said check the vid driver but other than that, the problem is more likely to be hardware (i guess ram, but it could be mobo as chris indicates).

well, seems like I am in typical customer hell, where there are two possible causes of problems. And the hardware vendor (Dell) says it´s software/driver related, and software people say it´s the other way around 😉

If it´s RAM related, shouldn´t it be okay to just run some of the stress tests? And couldn´t it be something related to disk/controller? (it´s a RAID, two 250GB disks working "as one big disk"). I am asking because the crash always occurs during opening files..

Six months ago I had BSODS all around after upgrading my RAM. One of the two sticks was Kingston and the other was labelled as "RAM-Bo" (from Mainland China).

Guess how I solved my trouble.

actually we’re other users jan. just pointing out what’s worked for us and what hasn’t. i don’t think anyone who’s responded here works for adobe. for myself, i used to be the hardware tech guy at my (X-L) company, now i’m a software developer. So i’ve been on both sides of the fence.

You didn’t offend anyone. rotflmao is sort of a teletype way to express laughter in the absence of voice possibilities.

Don’t know what it precisely stands for, though.

Back to business. If it constantly happens during disk operations, then I’d say either the disk where it opens the file from, or the disk that’s been assigned the "scratch" disk may be the culprit.

jan, i’d try taking out some ram one stick at a time to see if the problem goes away. if you’re comfortable with that.
