I expect my CS3 CD to arrive shortly. In prep I downloaded the CS3 clean script package and then went to check this forum. All I see are people having problems with the install on both XP and Vista.

Has anyone had a trouble-free install from the CD with XP. Is there a known solution from Adobe for these problems? One Vista CS3 user posted a solution that doesn’t seem to work for everyone but does for some. What about XP users. Frankly, I’m afraid at this point to even attempt the install when the CD comes, because I’ve read nothing from people who have had no problems.

What did you expect to find in a support forum?

It installed fine for me, Judith, although I feel for the people that are having problems. I’m running PSCS3 Extended on XP Pro-SP2.

The steps that I took: Defragged system drive. Created a TrueImage back up image of the system drive prior to installing CS3. De-activated the CS3 Public Beta, then uninstalled it. Installed CS3 Extended.

I had the Adobe cleanup script on hand, just in case, but didn’t run it (partly because of all the scary disclaimers that came with it).

I’ve had a couple of glitches (Bridge CS2 will no longer run, since installing CS3), but by and large CS3 is performing as expected.

yup. add/remove programs on the beta and ran install for ps cs3 ee from the dvd and it went fine.

Hopefully you ran add/remove programs and removed the beta that way before running the clean script. (that’s what it said to do in the clean script read me pdf file).

Thanks Nick and Dave:

Nick — I use TrueImage also, and usually set a restore point before any big installs, so that will be done. Will uninstall the beta, check to see that all mention of CS3 is gone on disk.

I will then probably run PCTools’ RegMechanic to clean up the registry of any CS3 entries that were missed. (Am also debating running the CS3 cleanup script although am leaning toward it.)

Finally I will turn off Diskeeper 10, which constantly defrags on the fly unless told expressly not to. Will also temporarily shut down ZA Security Suite to stop firewall and virus checking interference. At that point will install. I won’t uninstall Firefox as some have suggested, but have I missed something?

Any other suggestions for possible interference?

In the matter of the CS3 cleanup script…I’m not too upset at the prospect of losing my Actions. I have all of them stored in a second subdirectory, along with copies of all my plugins — plus I have everything archived to CD.

As for losing CS2, that happened to me with one of the CS3 betas, but managed to get it back.. Forget how I did that. If CS3 works I’ll probably not use CS2 any longer because I’m using LightRoom, which links to CS3.

I think the key is to have an uncluttered system.

I deactivated the beta and did an uninstall of all beta entries from Control panel.

This left a load of CS3-related files and folders in Documents and Settings and Program Files (7 in my case) which were manually deleted. See < http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=kb40 1492>

I had not used any plug-ins or actions in the beta.

All applications were closed (although I left Norton Corporate AV and Zone Alarm running).

The installer then ran through, slowly but surely. Everything seems to work; although Bridge is buggy this is not an installation problem.

That link was good info. Don’t know how I missed that one. It will be a good check to make sure that everything that should be removed is.

judith if you read the readme file with the clean script it suggests trying the install after each step. in my case i didn’t need to do all the reg cleaning and cleaning etc. just add remove programs. i’d suggest you follow adobe’s instructions on this.

This left a load of CS3-related files and folders in Documents and Settings and Program Files (7 in my case) which were manually deleted.

these were mostly prefrences you set while using the beta john. i left those and when ps3 ee loaded for the first time everything i had set up in the beta – down to palette locations and workspaces and custom action sets loaded etc – came in fine to the full app.

Actually only one was preferences. There were also shortcuts and things like Adobe Anchor Service. I didn’t kill Bonjour – don’t know what all the fuss is about!

No problems with CS3 Photoshop Extended on XP pro SP2. Disabled Zone Alarm firewall and Norton Anti-Virus and enabled my rabbit’s foot.

Moved excess BETA files to another folder (left overs from Add/Remove) and moved some of them back after pocketing the rabbit’s foot and wiping away 29 minutes of cold sweat.

PS Did not use the script.

All really good suggestions. Glad to hear some success stories. Since this morning I discovered that CS3 arrived 9 days ago and was languishing in the package room 18 stories below me. The Culprit was DHL, who is a chronic offender. I’m in a high-rise, and DHL is supposed to go to the units and leave a package, or a notice that it’s at the package room if no one answers the door. DHL, for the past 5 yrs just comes into the building straight to the package room, leaves the delivery and tells the people there they left a notice. When LR arrive 2 months ago the same thing happened. I finally got fed up today and called DHL to lodge a complaint against the lcoal delivery facility. Adobe probably has a financial incentive to use DHL and is not about to change shippers.

Read through the CS3 materials (took about 20 seconds), and since my computer is tied up during the day with production activities, will set aside tomorrow to do things. Will post the results to this thread.

Judith, I forgot to mention that I ran the Registry Mechanic utility before installing CS3, but I see that is on your list, too. Don’t know if it was necessary or not, but it certainly couldn’t hurt.

I’m not crazy about DHL, either. I knew which day my package was supposed to arrive, so I stayed at home waiting for them. At about 2 in the afternoon, I was getting antsy, so stepped out on the front porch to look around. The package was there; they didn’t even knock!

Nick:

I find Reg Mechanic one of the most effective utilities I use. It does a complete job and has not caused any problems like other registry cleaners I’ve tried. I routinely run it once a week and after each uninstall. When the marked items appear I check each one carefully, simply to see what it’s finding. Then, I alwasy do a re-boot to make sure it hasn’t destroyed anything.

I find it handy for re-installing trial versions if necessary. For example, I had downloaded a trial version of some program and just didn’t have the time to try it out. Before I knew it, the trial expired. I uninstalled it and tried a re-install of the trial. It wouldn’t let me, saying my trial period had expired. When I uninstalled again and ran RegMechanic, and manually deleted all subdirectories, I was able to reinstall the trial version.

The deed is done and it appears to have gone well. There were a few stumbles along the way, but none that appears serious. I’ll delineate them anyway.

Went through the uninstall protocol last night before shutting down. Reading through the instructions, I saw an item that said before uninstalling any CS3 program, Deactivate it. This is done through the Help Menu Bar dropdown. I found that option greyed out in the PS CS3 beta so I proceeded with the Uninstall from the Add/Remove programs. It took longer than expected, but appeared to have done a very thorough job. I checked through the registry item by item (that took a while) and found it stripped of every CS3 key as shown in the procedure. The only remnants of CS3 I found were a few in the Docs and Settings subdirectories relating to Bridge CS3. I cleaned these out by hand.

Then ran RegMechanic. It found nothing pertaining to Adobe or CS3. Rebooted. Everything fine. It was late (I’ve learned never to do anything on the computer late at night. I get fumble-fingered.) so closed down.

This morning I set a restore point, ran Reg Mechanic again (it found nothing), unloaded ZoneAlarm SS, turned off Diskeeper’s on the fly defragging, and proceeded with the install. It appeared to be running well with no error messages — a slow (a watched Progress Bar never seems to move) but steady process. At the end it said it would continue after the next reboot. The installer closed out. I waited a few minutes for something to appear, like a message to reboot, but everything was quiet — no disk activity or CD spinning.

Rebooted and the system came up normally, but not a peep from CS3. I went into Start–>Programs and loaded P’shop CS3. It came up and immediately asked me to enter my serial number, which I did. It then brought up the activation screen and I complete activation. As soon as that closed out, another screen (blank) popped up and sat. I waited at least a minute, and finally the screen filled with a message that it could not access the web page address and gave a few reasons why. It gave no indication of what address it was trying to access nor could I close out the screen. I finally had to use Task Manager to close out Pshop. When I re-loaded it, the first screen to pop up was a Registrations form. I filled it out and sent it on its way. That went fine.

I was able to open Bridge from CS3, which I couldn’t with the Beta. After playing with Bridge for a few minutes, meant to minimize it but hit the X instead, shutting it down. About 10 seconds later I got a message that Bridge was having a problem shutting down and asking if I wanted to send a report etc etc..the usual message. Don’t know what that’s all about, but the bottom line is that CS3 appears to have gone in with no problem that I’ve yet found.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Here’s my experience: System is WinXP Pro SP2 on Athlon64 2GHz with 2GB RAM. Had CS2 & CS3-beta installed. Took a ghost image of that. Then uninstalled CS3-beta. Rebooted. Ran a registry cleanup tool. Manually deleted left over folders (didn’t know about the cleanup script). Then installed CS3 standard. No problems at all.

I installed CS3 upgrade version last night to both my Desktop and Laptop – all went without problem. The only thing I did first was to check for ‘Conflicts’ using CCleaner (non found) and then defragmented the disk. I didn’t uninstall CS2 because general advice seems to be leave it on for the time being whilst getting used to CS3.
The only strange things that I found were (a) the length of time it takes for CS3 to install and (b) as someone previously mentioned, following install nothing happens. The programme tells you that it has installed, you click ok and then nothing – no shortcut on the Desktop of in the Sytem Tray, no being asked to register – no nothing. I searched and found CS3 in the Programe list and opened it this way, only then was I asked to register. I have now created a shortcut on the desktop by right clicking in the Programme list.
A big plus was that when I opened Lightroom I found that CS3 had automatically been selected as the first editing option which from information gained in the Lightroom forum isn’t always the case. Lucky me.

Haha, that’s exactly what pleased me. No shortcut anywhere without asking me … It was right where I expected it to be: Start – Programs – …

Are you running any other applications? Is your AV updater turned off (it might use IExplore.exe)? Is Windows Update pulling something down? Running any games? Quicken? Just about anything running under Windows that accesses the Internet can be designed to use Internet Explorer’s functionality — even if IE is "uninstalled" (all that does is eliminate the ability to run it directly as an application from the desktop). You can actually terminate every process in task manager except task manager itself, including the GUI shell, explore.exe; if the shell doesn’t automatically restart, with task manager running you can click on File > New Task (Run) and type in explore.exe to get a clean shell running, without all the user-login processes. Then try it.

It’s probably not directly relevant, but when I did a successful install of CS3, Firefox was my default browser.

Most programs (except Windows Update) will use the default browser.

Google Earth, believe it or not, ignores the default browser and uses IE. So does Quicken. So does Electronic Arts’ EA Link. Any number of programs use IE.

Hello

Installed the CS3 extended tryout on 4 year machine with 1Gb ram on spoof XP2. Never used the beta. Seems to run very well on the whole. I’m not sure it is worth actually buying, except for ACR4.0

I have all programs closed, firefox as my default browser and I’ve many times attempted to close the iexplorer.exe processes. The processes won’t close and still Ps won’t install. Is there an ADOBE solution to this?

I’m glad there are other people having this problem, though!
