I use Adobe Lightroom. I want to try Photoshop CS3, but without screwing up my LR and CS2 installation.

I wonder what files are really needed, for example Adobe Bridge will not be used since I bought Lightroom already and I don’t think Bridge will add something to my workflow. Can I just uncheck it during the installation? What about the rest?

As far as I know there is no free trial available at the moment.

When you buy the retail version it gives you a free 30 days before you put in your serial number and register. I guess they couldn’t be bothered to write a separate installer.

You don’t get the option to leave out Bridge.

I have seen the installation process at a colleague last week. He bought CS3 the moment he could, as he always does. I’m always a bit anxious to buy everything and especially install everything. Everything works fine now on my computer.
Unfortunately he lives a few hundred kilometers away and he is the only one I know with CS3 at the moment, so I cannot play on his computer.

During the installation process I saw the option to uncheck many parts, like Adobe Bridge, Camera Raw 4.0 etc, but many items were unknown to me.

He promised me to send a copy, as I understand this is not illegal, since I have a 30day trial. I hope Adobe releases a trial before that on its website. Illegal versions are not an option since it’s a common and shared computer and I still feel it’s not something I want to do. Until this moment I have never used pirated versions (well, that’s a lie, …I used a pirated Windows version when I was a student years ago).

The next few weeks I have the time to try one and another, after that it’s busy again and I can’t risk loosing to much time fiddling with a new program.

Therefore, my questions …what can I uncheck to run PS without the candy I don’t need, like Bridge etc.

You may be right about Bridge being an option but I didn’t notice that.

Not sure about the legality of what you are proposing and technically you may storing up trouble for later.

Are you sure Bridge really has nothing to offer that LR doesn’t?

You likely saw the beta version. Unfortunately, the shipping version, at least of PSCS3 Extended, does not give you any choice. It loads your machine up with modules that many users simply do not want–such as Version Cue, etc, etc, etc.

I presume there will be a way to unload some of the features once they are on, but I have not tried that yet.

By the way, there are ways to install without fouling up your LR install, and also for CS2( but with more problems)–read all the many install problem threads here (they won’t be hard to find!)to get a feel for what is ahead for you (possibly).

Also by the way, while you may not think Bridge offers anything over LR, my view is that you probably are saying that without understanding the differences between LR and Bridge for functions like keywording, sorting, etc, and even developing. Bridge makes my workflow for everything but Data Management about twice as fast–and that is from timed experiements with batches of 50 images of various formats.

Hmm, I don’t know it was a beta version, didn’t asked him. If the final release version don’t give you any options and the installation is still buggy, I think I wait a few months longer. I’m very curious if it is a worthy upgrade, but its again a few hundred bucks and already bought LR a month ago.

I agree I didn’t compare LR with the new Bridge, but at first glance the new Bridge looks a lot like LR and applying metadata is already easy with LR. The old bridge was not so good for selecting images with Nikon NEF files.

My workflow before Lightroom was: “Nikon View to Adobe Bridge to Phase One to PS CS2”. At this moment I’m experimenting if “LR to PS CS2” is good enough. Phase One is very good, but so it LR. The image quality of LR seems good, but I still have to compare both converters, but already favor LR because of ease of use.

I hope I didn’t bought LR to fast.

Thank you.
