The missing dbghelp.dll file notice happens on startup with CS3 just as it did with CS2. I click OK and Photoshop continues to load and performs flawlessly. But…it drives me crazy to have this appear with this version as well. I’ve searched for info and it seems to be a Registry file that’s been overwriten or mucked up somehow. But is there a fix? I’ve never had a problem with any version of Photoshop until this started with CS2 and it HAS be fixed, sigh.

it’s probably something that came with one of your plugins. i don’t think ms ships it.

it’s part of the ms visual studio redistributable. you installed something that someone wrote in msvs and either removed it (and then it failed to clean itself up correctly) or is broken. reinstall the plugin, reinstall then remove the plugin with add remove programs in the control panel, or try to copy the dll into \windows\system32 (assuming you have xp).

dbghelp.dll SHOULD be in your system32 folder. it’s the windows image helper from microsoft. part of the os and also a redistributable with their development tools.

Are you running Vista? I seem to recall that Vista dropped support for old-style help files, and they have a hotfix to add it back. The help system for one of your plugins may require this support.

No, running XP with all service releases. Funny, when this happened with CS2 I did a search on my system for the file and it wasn’t found. I’m doing another now. I installed CS3 yesterday and it was fine until I altered one of the preferences. Then I got the error message on re-opening the program. The only other thing I did was associate CS3 with my main plugins folder. I keep all things that I need outside of Photoshop but still in the Adobe folder.

OK, good thing I did another search!!! It’s sitting in System 32 folder. But why doesn’t CS3 see it? Is this a dll that has many different versions? I have to figure out how to have CS3 see it. It just doesn’t do any good to rebuild the preferences folder because then I’ll just set things up as I have them now. There has to be a way to introduce these guys and let them have a date!!!!

You need to register it. From a command window, try navigating to Windows/System32 and then typing regsvr dbghelp.dll .

Registering didn’t work. Got an error message that said it can’t be registered. Something upstream from that must need to be registered but haven’t a clue. I’m just wondering if I’m the only one with this problem and why it’s occuring again with CS3 just as it did with CS2. I did a search here in the Forums and came up with nothing. Can’t believe Adobe never heard of this. Going to go over to Photoshopuser and see if they know anything about it. Thanks a bunch! I’ll post back when I get an answer.

Mimi,

As I mentioned in another related thread to you, I too found that dbghelp.dll wouldn’t register, but I’m not so sure that’s a problem. I’ve seen other DLLs report the same message when I attempted to register them and yet in spite of that failure, the addition of that DLL file to my system was all that was required to clear whatever error prompted me to obtain a copy of the DLL in the first place. If you’re no longer seeing any error message with dbghelp.dll now on your system, I’d suggest you just leave things at that and simply keep an eye open for any new problems arising.

Daryl

dlls do not have to be self registering. that one apparently is not. they’re just used by calling applications as is.

The dll is in the Windows\System32 folder and Photoshop is looking for it at startup. For some reason, Photoshop is unable to locate it. The question is "why and what could be preventing it". Fortunately, it’s not something that’s critical for Photoshop to complete startup and run. It’s just annoying for me to have to wait for the error message to appear so that I can get rid of it.

The interesting thing is that this was a problem with CS2 as well. I could never get it fixed. And here it is with CS3. I never had it with any earlier version. Something is going on with these last two. I know that a lot of people are having various problems that I’m seeing in the Forums but this is the one and only problem I’ve ever had with Photoshop and I started with version 4. I suppose I’m lucky but I’m so used to Photoshop performing flawlessly that to see this appear again in CS3 is just a drag.

Mimi,

I never looked beyond the properties of dbghelp.dll to get any idea as to what it was, where the properties said it was a "Windows Image Helper". I though perhaps that meant it was used by some image-handling application, such as Paint, or Fax and Image Viewer…something along those lines.

To the contrary, the Microsoft website shows this as being part of the Debugger Tools for Windows and states it is part of the O/S installation. So, perhaps your file became corrupted and if you downloaded it from a site other than Microsoft, you might have a version conflict of some sort. I suggest you try downloading and installing the Debugger Tools for Windows package to see if that cleans things up. The download is found at < http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86. mspx>

Hope that helps,

Daryl
