I’d like to create a new image from an existing image, but with the picture fully opaque at the top and bottom the screen but have the picture become more transparent as it approaches the middle of the screen (from both top and bottom), with the center being fully transparent. This transparency can extend the full with of the image, as I’m only really needing this vertical gradient.

Let me try to show this to help you understand… if 5=fully opaque and 1= fully transparent, the effect would have the alpha channel layed out something like this:

5555555
5555555
5555555
4444444
3333333
2222222
1111111
1111111
1111111
2222222
3333333
4444444
5555555
5555555
5555555

How can I do this?

Thanks!

Make a Layer Mask. Look at the various gradients available with the Gradient tool. There is one that goes from dark to light to dark again. You can edit them to your taste and use the result in the mask.

Note also, if you use the solid to transparent gradients, even in a channel they can be added and "built up" on each other.

Thanks – that was enough to get me there.
