Not sure what your question is. QM is just another way of seeing,and editing a selection. In addition, you can make secondary selections in QM.
Try this. In QM, go to the Channels palette and Ctrl-click on the Quickmask channel to get the crawly ants. Then modify them with Lasso or whatever. Fill or delete from the mask, then hit Q again.
Sorry, I am still unsure how to use the QM. What I have to do is, work with quick mask to select and alter two areas of my image. Can I apply a filter or gradient while in QM?

No, or rather, it won’t respect the selection in mask mode.
You CAN apply a filter or gradient to the mask itself however.
When you have a live selection, entering Quick Mask shows the selection as a red mask. This can be seen in the Channels palette. Painting on the mask with black or white (your foreground and background colours are temporarily switched to black and white) will add to, or subtract from, the mask. Thus it is a very handy way of tweaking a selection.
If you save a selection it is stored with the file as an Alpha channel.
Okay, once I finish tweaking the selection in Quick Mask, do I then go to standard mode to edit it?
To edit what? QuickMask IS the selection. That’s where you can tweak it, if you wish.
Channel=Selection=Mask. Just different ways of looking at the same thing.

Okay, let me try again. I have an image of the front of a building with a clock and windows. I first made my selection (in standard mode), around the clock. When I enter Quick Mask the selection of course turns red. To add a filter to the clock, do I have to return to standard mode or quick mask to add the filter?
Return to standard mode and the filter will be applied to the area enclosed by the selection.
