CS3, Win XP SP 2.

When I "Save As" a TIFF file, it saves the image in a format that other applications do not understand, and cannot be viewed or used!

Looking at the output options, I find that it saves the file with Pixel Order as "Per Channel." with a lot other strange properties They only way to get other applications to be able to use this file, I must go back into PS and manually change the output properties to the normal standard for all applications.

1. Why does PS do such a foolish thing?
2. How can I make it do what should be normal?

Thanks,
Wil

In the TIFF Options dialog box is there not an Interleaved choice under Pixel Order? I believe this is normally selected by default and you should be able to change to it if Per Channel is selected when you open the dialog. Or am I misunderstanding your post?

I don’t find any options with the "Save" command. PS just seems to sometimes save the file in the "Per Channel" version, and that causes the problems.

The "Save As" dialog does give you the ability to correct the problem, and that is how I must do it.

I only find the problem when I try to access the file in some other application that expects the file in the interleaved version. When that happens, I must open the file in PS and goto the "Save As" option to correct the situation.

My questions are why does PS create the problem in the first place? And how can it be prevented? I can’t find anywhere to make any default selection about this. I’ve had this problem in CS2, and now again in CS3.

The very first time you save you should get the Options dialog. Set it correctly then and it should always be correct, unless things have changed in a major way.

Otherwise, Save As…

You would NOT want the dialog coming up every time you Save. That would be a major pain.

If you open a TIFF and simply Save, it doesn’t give you the dialog; it uses the existing settings.

True. That’s because the original creator already determined the settings. It would only make sense to Save As to make sure the settings are as you want them.
