You may want to try the custom installation approach referred to here (in your case it would appear you would have to do an uninstall first)

I have not tried this myself as I don’t plan to upgrade from CS until I see a drop-off in the number of problems with CS3.
Good luck.
Kenneth,
Thanks for that reference. I’ll check it out.
Kenneth,
It worked perfectly. When you install, it gives you the familiar old style choice of the componenets you wish to install–checkboxes.
There is a short list of required componenets. I put those on and PS and Bridge. None of the rest.
It is very obvious that PS opens much faster without that huge load of manadatory payloads!
Once again, thanks!

really? while i’m with everyone one the seeming shoddyness of this release (at least the installer) as i mentioned before in this forum, i’ve NEVER seen a version of ps open faster than cs3 ee! i mean less than 10 seconds from click to usable desktop. i have ps7 on my work machine and had to use that over the last couple of days for the first time since getting cs3 at home. MAN! i had enough time (comparativly) to get a cup of coffee!
so my point is, how much faster can it get than under 10 seconds? it HAS to take some time to load up it’s normal stuff (plugins, actions, other custom stuff etc). i don’t see how removing (or not installing) the non manditory installs could possibly make it go any faster.
then again, getting lucky on my first installation try means i’m NOT about to uninstall right now just to test this out! 🙂
(but it is a great catch for those who haven’t installed yet and don’t want all that crap loaded on their box with ps and bridge!)
Dave,
How’s 4 seconds strike you. It was taking me about 12 seconds with CS3 extended with all the stuff I did not want installed–and that is hardly slow as you point out. And there are a lot of variables in this as well from user to user machines.
Of course, the install was considerably faster and there is simply less stuff on there for potential conflicts, so it might be worth a try for those folks still having difficulty getting an install as well.
What gets me you know where is why Adobe didn’t make these optional installs available in the first place. All that is required is adding a short txt script and removing the ‘requires’ section of the XML proxy file with a simple text editor like notepad. 5 minute job, and bingo the old familiar component choice screen, checkboxes and all, pops right up when you start the install. Check what you want–5 choices are required as noted in the instructions, including Bonjour for registration and authentification–and then its good bye to virtually everything, even Bridge, if you don’t want it!
I’ll post a reference over in the long install thread in case it might be useful to some of those still struggling.

amazing!

I agree. Seems like there was a lot of work going on in the product and a rush to whip together an install package. I’ve seen it where I work.
removing the ‘requires’ section of the XML proxy file with a simple text editor like notepad.
of course typically that would only display when the user chose "Custom Installation" from setup. That path’s been eliminated.
including Bonjour for registration and authentification
have you confirmed that? afaik, bonjour is a tool for discovering and configuring devices on a network, not necessarily for the connection. they’ve never needed it before to ‘call home’.

I think that’s a great idea, fantastic job!
Some firewalls can be configured so that each time an app "phones home" they have to ask permission first. Panda even insists on configuring the first time out which is where you can control it’s behavior. If it comes up unexpectedly, just say no.
On your other thread don, I have a question about saving that file correctly.

zonealarm free vers.
Don,
I’m glad this worked! I was lucky to find the original instructions at www.ilemoned.com with a Google search on CS3 installation problems. I’ll be trying it out myself soon.
