Ever since the ‘final’ version of CS3 came out I have been monitoring this newsgroup with all the disturbing messages – that generally get no responses from anybody. You just post your gripes and contribute nothing. Let me try to be different.

I purchased the ‘upgrade’ from CS (ver 8) from Amazon for about $195 -no tax or freight required.

Here is what we get:
The installation time is A MIND-NUMBING 25 min plus. Of that 21 minutes of that is installing "shared components" (likely all the bloatware who knows or care).
4 min to install Photoshop. As always the installation went smoothly including successful activation – as one should expect on my very standard P4 latest XP that has never had any program installation issues.
You are given NO reasonable alternative to installing all that stuff other than perhaps a ‘custom install’ which is generally not realistic for application and use oriented users such as me.

I also found (and deleted) five tracking cookies that we also get.

The Browser failed to consistently start when I clicked on files. No telling if they fixed it from ver 8 where one had to delete certain config files "periodically" and reset to be able to do file operations. ???

The Bridge causes crashes on exit.

No manual or even a useful help file is included. Just try to determine what is saved or changed using workspace. It makes use of phrases such as "among the things saved are …" Never the courage to write a definitive list.

When you save a JPG then the PS insists on including the word "copy" in the file name. I have my own way of handling that using a single letter and really don’t need abobe to ‘have me do what is best for me’ – in their flawed marketing/sales opinion. Have found no way to correct this except by renaming files.

*****************************************

Here is the end result of what I have done to my setup – one step at a time:
I do photo editing and prior to CS1 I used PSP(old ver) which I still use for many things where it remains superior (such as erase and unerase all in psp format).
I do NOT work with a bunch of others that either guide me or must look over my shoulder – on some massive corporate network etc. In the preferences – two sets Browser and PS. – turn off all the options that are unclear to you and any hint of shared anything – including the Version Cue.
Increase the memory allocated to PS by say 10 or 25% from the default minimum.

Now the PS starts in a fraction of time and the Browser works roughly as intended. It remains tardy and sluggish showing the folder tree on the left and may even just collapse everything to My Computer. My prog files are on C: and working files on D: as if that made any difference.

In spite of all this Bridge causes a crash on every single exit – giving me that annoying MS nag screen. To deal with this PC World – May 2007 page 118 has a brute force fix for this nag screen: In XP Start. Run , type sysdm.cpl and press enter.
Click Advanced tab in Systems Prop. box
Choose Error Reporting
When done click OK twice.

Vista – gives you NO option and unless you go to the trouble of researching how to disable – this info is sent to MS every single lousy time there is a problem. MS knows what is good for you – ALSO 🙂

What is good in CS3?
I have seen no change or real improvement to all the filters and adjustments that I generally use as compared to Ver 8 CS ( I skipped CS2).
Are there any major changes that I may have overlooked?

Are there any new "Must Have" routines?

It really it looks like I have just wasted $195 and a day of my time and I may even go back to the CS1 or CS version and keep using the PSP Browser that has proven to be both reliable and idiot proof at the end of a long day.
So far there has been NO REASON TO UPGRADE TO CS3.

Regards

PS: I did not go through ALL the "what is new" files in that what I did see was just more promotions and no answers to anything of interest to me.
Settings etc would be changed and who knows what effort may be required to undo any damage … from their spam.

That is one way to make it all work.
Don’t know about the Browser in CS – if it has been fixed.
