Your friend can’t "give" you his old copy if he used it to upgrade to CS3. I’m quite sure you wouldn’t want to be using illegally obtained software so please find out if that’s the case.

If for some strange reason he actually bought a full license to CS3 then ask him to fill out the license transfer form. Details here:

Just wanted to know if I could upgrade to CS3 from my 7.0 without having to buy any of the other versions. Also, didn’t know what else I need to purchase in order to work with RAW format images. I am a digital photographer and I want to update. Please point me in the right direction and let me know how much money I am looking at spending.

PS 7.0 is the oldest version eligible for upgrade. Check out the Adobe Store for details.

And yes, you can upgrade directly without buying the intermediate versions.

The price in the US is $199 from Adobe, possibly a few dollars cheaper elsewhere. (Normal version, not extended.)

Your "friend" may need that disk if something happens to his computer to reinstall his upgrade. Aside from the legal issues, you shuld probably give it back to him/her.
