I’m a new user to PhotoShop (v6) and I’m trying to remover what I can only describe as a ‘grey wash’ from an image to try to clean it up and make it look a bit brighter.

Here is the image (400k) http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mike.jb/brian.jpg

Does anyone have any good tips for removing some of the grey tinge to this image or generally clean it up?

Thanks,

Mike.

Levels adjustment should do it. IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > LEVELS Or click on the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" in the Layers Palette.

Also try Auto Levels (Shift+CTRL+L)

or go to adjustments, brightness contrast and crank up the contrast or down on the lightness.

First step is to sharpen it a lot. It looks like there’s some lovely film grain in the shot, and sharpening tends to make images appear brighter just by itself.

The right side of the picture has plugged up midtones. I’d suggest masking the bookshelves and tweaking the mids of the rest.

An interesting image with lots of detail just about everywhere. The original suffers from too bright a foreground due to the use of flash, as well as some interesting areas of detail, such as the cameras in a row above the work area, the book titles, and even the stacks of jars and boxes in the lower right corner.

I took a shot at correcting this image and wound up with several masked curve correction layers and a sharpening layer to bring out detail where needed. I’ll be happy to share the results with you privately via email, but would prefer, with your permission, to include it on my web site as a short tutorial.
