Hi,

This is regarding using our regional language – Telugu in Adobe Photoshop CS3. We were working in Adobe Photoshop 7.0 version from long back on windows 98 and windows Xp. To get our regional language – Telugu, in Adobe Photoshop, we use a special application, running in the background, which sends the appropriate characters while we are typing. Because, in our Telugu langauge, there are around 56 characters and there are some thousands of characters with mixed characters. Thats why a company based in Chennai, India, designed a program which will run in the background and sends the appropriate keys while typing the characters. They produced around 50 fonts for our telugu langauge and almost our state, Andhra Pradesh, using these fonts very frequently. But now the main problem arises. We came to know that Adobe Photoshop CS2 and CS3 doesnt support this type of application running in the background and sending the appropriate keys, failed, even though we are working on the windows xp only. While other applications like CorelDRAW X3, Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe Photoshop 7.0 are supporting this type of application. Even though Adobe people stopped producing the further versions of Adobe PageMaker 7.0, we are still insisting with that only, because of this regional language software. We are unable to use this application either in Adobe Photoshop CS3, CS2, Adobe InDesign CS2, CS3 and other CS2 and CS3 applications. Another interesting thing about this is, we bought the background application for typing our regional language for Rs. 12,000/- (Indian Rupees) and when we enquired about the same with their support team, they told that they are not planning to release any new version of their application for CS2 or CS3 and they stopped listening to our problem. Even though, Adobe people has released the latest and versions with many enhancements, many people in our state are not able to upgrade or willing to buy or go to this latest Adobe Software, CS2 or CS3. Another interesting thing is because of this silly application, many designers and graphic artists are still breathing in Windows 98 with their Pentium 4 and Core 2 Duo processor computers. They are not at all want to upgrade their base operating system because of no support for Telugu language in the latest adobe versions. Only a limited number of people (Ofcourse, they can be counted on fingers), are using the latest versions. But when they want to use Telugu language in Adobe CS2 or CS3 applications, they are first typing the required layers in old versions and they are opening them in new versions and using them. The great pain in this is, if there are any corrections, they have to work completely from the scratch. I guess there are so many other languages like Chinese, Japaneses etc, having double – byte or multi byte characters in their languages, are successfully using Adobe CS2 and CS3 applications in their language. As Telugu is only used in Andhra Pradesh, is this the reason behind adobe neglected indian languages. Anyway, now i want to know is there any one on this forum can help us in any technology or development assitance or development instructions or any other help regarding this problem. As we are already using these fonts, we want to continue using these fonts in the future too. B’coz, many customers, know the font names, even though they are not that good at computers at all. So, any one please help me in this or give atleast an idea to get working telugu in adobe CS2 or CS3 versions. This definitely, increase the sales of Adobe CS3 Suits in Andhra Pradesh. I gaurantee this. Ofcourse, its not the problem with the sales of Adobe CS3 Suits, but its the problem with our language application. Help me in this context.

1) use paragraphs. it’s VERY difficult to read your post!

2) this problem is faced by every plugin developer that wishes to work with photoshop. either they upgrade THEIR software to keep up with the changes in photoshop or they don’t, in which case, they go out of business.

the only solution i can think of is fix the software that does the translation.

this forum is user to user only. if you wish to bring this up directly with adobe, (and that’s not a bad idea!) you should contact them directly through their web site (www.adobe.com).

Dear Dave Milbut,

Sorry for not maintaining the proper formatting while posting to this site. I will keep this in mind in my future postings.

Sorry if i wrongly posted anything regarding adobe.

The main problem here is, the application developer for our regional language is not not interested in further supporting their application for future versions of adobe applications. thats why i am asking for any help. i am basically a programmer and i want to develop an application for CS2 and CS3. I thought that it will be better to start building on a suggestion, but not from the scratch. Thats why i am asking for this help.

Dear Mr. Jeff Schewe,

Thanks for your help. Please let me know if i can do anything in this. If you know please redirect me to a proper channel where can i get help on this.

Regards,
Vanga Sasidhar.

Dear Dave Milbut,

Sorry if I keep on insisting on the same issue.

Regarding the puchase of the source code, I have already developed my own stand alone application for our regional language. So, I am confident about developing my own application which will work in the Adobe Latest applications too.

Here i just need an idea in programming or idea in typography or an idea in how Adobe latest applications deal with double-byte fonts. I guess this issue is tending towards a little bit technical. Unless i dont know how Adobe People are dealing with fonts, i cannt do anything even if I purchase the source code from the application vendor. As this is Adobe Photoshop’s User to User forums, I thought that some one who is already using double-byte fonts in Adobe Photoshop CS2 or CS3 will assist me in this problem.

One more interesting thing, from Adobe Photoshop CS2, Adobe is supporting opentype fonts too. Microsoft windows XP is introduced a new feature, using which we can use any regional language in the whole windows XP environment. They provide support for Telugu language too. But they gave only one Font – Gautami. The strange thing is Adobe Photoshop CS2 or CS3 doesnt support this in-built regional language option in it. Adobe is neither supporting the Microsoft’s Windows XP’s operating system’s feature nor our own regional language application.

Regarding, Jeff’s suggestion, I will try to contact adobe india people. But I wonder how the very complex languages like Chinese or Japanese are successfully incorporated in computers and Adobe Applications. I am thinking that if i get the idea of how this typography technology works, it will be a great use for our indian states, as there are around 20 complex double – byte regional languages are using in India.

I am in a little bit confusion whether i can continue this discussion or not. If you dont mind, please let me know whether i am in the right place with my problem or not.

Regards,
Vanga Sasidhar.

<http://www.adobe.com/devnet/>

in there you can also apply for the api and related documentation that should help you on your way.
