I have recently installed CS3 Web Premium and the installation went smooth. But the first time (and every time since) I tried to open a PSD file I get the following error…

"Could not complete your request because of a program error."

This is on a relatively new Dell E1505 laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium (32 Bit) with 2GB Ram, Intel Core Duo T2250 dual core CPU.

Everything else ‘appears’ to be working OK. I can open Jpegs and make changes and save as a PSD but if I try to open ANY PSD I get that error.

I first discovered this problem trying to open a file I had created and saved with the product, then in the course of troubleshooting discovered that I couldn’t even open the sample PSD files that were included with the install. These same files import into Flash without a problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

I am having this exact same problem on a new install. Have you solved it?

reset the preferences per the faq?

I tried that, it didn’t help.

Anything I try to open, it either comes up with: "Adobe Photoshop CS3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

or

‘Could not complete your request because of a program error"

And I can’t open ANYTHING, not even JPG or PNG.

I am on Windows XP, with CS3 Web Premium installed.

try a repair install or reinstall over top of itself. that’s the only other thing i can think of. maybe you should deactivate first before trying that…

I did reinstall, but i will try deactivating before this time.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Brad,

It sounds like you have a different problem than I have. I have no problem with JPEGs… it is only PSD files that cause an error and the message is always the same. I have tried resetting preferences but that did not help. I will try a reinstall and let you know how it turns out.

Thanks,
Ray

I deactivated then did a "repair" install and still have the same problem. I am currently doing a complete uninstall. Once that is complete I will reinstall and let you know how it goes.

Thanks,

If you try to rename or copy or move any psd files do you happen to get an "access denied" message?

If so you may need to follow this procedure (it happened to me today):

Yeah!! Problem solved!

It turns out… my default network printer quit working about a week before I installed CS3 (I hadn’t gotten around to fixing it yet). I don’t know if the driver got corrupt or the network connection configuration got changed, but I went ahead and deleted the printer and let PDF be my default printer… lo and behold… I can now open PSD files with PS CS3. So, moral of the story… if you can open JPEGs but not PSDs… check your default printer.

Thanks for everyone who tried to help!

Ray, you’re right, that’s what it was! Weird. Except my default printer works fine! I guess the driver just isn’t friendly. I hope Adobe can fix this bug.

Thanks for the updates and the fix!
