It’s a very simple technique using a layer mask
Open your image.
Copy the layer, you now have two.
Hit D on the keyboard to set your for/background colours to default (black and white)
With the background layer selected, hit ctrl+backspace to fill the layer with white.
With the top layer active, add a layer mask, third icon from left at bottom of layers palette, if not visible, hit F7.
Click on the mask icon to make it active and with the brush tool, paint around the edge with black to reveal the white under layer. It is possible to use "special grunge" brushes to achieve the desired look. Try searching for free ones in Google.
