CS3 vs. CS2 image display issues

I am comparing the same raw file between CS3 and CS2 on the same system. In CS3 smooth gradient areas appear banded, CS2 same image does not exhibit this problem, gradient areas are smooth and continuous in tone. Any ideas?

I am having the same banding issue in CS3 with all images, regardless of file type. I’m pretty certain that it’s a color setting because initially my images looked fine in CS3. I believe that the banding issue occurred after I had played with a lot of settings. (terminal tweaker here) I haven’t yet figured out the exact setting that is causing the banding. I’m back to using PS2 until I find the problem or someone answers this post.

More information please. Are you viewing the file in ACR (v3.7 in CS2 and v4.1 in CS3)? Are settings comparable?

Or, are you viewing converted images (e.g. tif, psd, jpeg) in Photoshop?

Are you viewing at 100% Is it consistent with all images?

im having banding problems with raw images striaght off my 5d and 350 d into cs3 no probs with same image files in cs2 all cs3 settings are as loaded by defailt, no tweaking at all…help

RAW related problems are better served in the Adobe Camera RAW forum (you’ll find the link near the top of this list).

Mathias, it may be a colour issue, so could be alright were it is. I’ve noticed some weird colour behaviour in CS3 and it would’nt necessarily be down to RAW.

Carl, we’ve noticed slight colour discrepancies with the 5D ourselves so may not be Photoshop’s fault entirely, especially on a white B/G. If you have a subject with a white B/G and you pull the curves down straight from the middle and drag it down along to the right until you come to the 1st box within curves dialogue, you’ll see an exaggerated banding image.

If you go to my thread <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc43e66/3> and check the images, you’ll see how PSCS3 deals with diffuse glow. You can then drag the image into Photoshop and check the banding yourself. I don’t think your problem is specific to RAW. It happens to us when we use .jpg and I think Canon need to deal with this.

Hi all, well I have got a bit further with my process of elimination with my CS3 banding problem, opened a raw file in CS3 left it exactly as it came off camera just clicked on open in raw and then saved it as a psd…….there was banding visible in both the raw convertor and in regular cs3 btw.

I reinstalled CS2 and loaded the same rawimage opened it the same and saved it also as a psd……there was no banding visibla at any stage during this process….
I then opened BOTH psds in CS2……both displayed identical

I then openedBOTH psds in CS3…….BOTH BANDED…hmm kinda-eureka..

I at least now know its not the image that is being degraded it is something to do with the way Photoshop CS3 is displaying images that makes them look low rez and banded, its not the actual images.

OK, at this stage I am stumped with what this could mean or how to solve it.

any ideas guys?

not being a color expert like some of the guys here, the first place i’d look is to compare my color settings in the preferences between cs2 and cs3…

Well, this might be a stupid question.. but where are they now? They used be be under Photoshop>Color Settings…
.. but now they’re not.

Hi all ,

well another frustrating weekend and still no answers, is anyone at adobe reading these forums? if so, any ideas?

I have checked my Colour preferances and they are identical on the CS2 version that works fine and the CS3 that is still messed up.

The wait for a usable CS3 continues…

Oh my god …finally!!!!

Andrew, Thank you….. SO SO SO much.

that was it , for some reason my monitor was set up for "Medium" rather then "Highest" in display properties, Voila… now I dont have the images that where originally causing me problems as the client needed it, but on new images it now seems fine. Thanks to all for help.
