I am trying to teaching myself photo shop. I read on how to add layers but the books do not say how to get started. I am creating a new file and then new layer but I can’t seem to place objects into the layers. I know I am doing something really dumb. Can anyone help me. What am I doing in the beginning process that is not correct. Or better still what is the beginning process? For instance Step 1 …I believe I can go from there. Any help would be appreciated.

Roger,

If you follow what Bill said, keep in mind that what you drag from an image source to your working image will create a new layer if you are working in the RGB mode. The same is true if you cut/copy & paste the data.

Now, if you are not working with multiple files but are instead simply trying to create multiple objects on a separate layer from other image content, the process is pretty simple:

1. Create the new layer using the layer palette drop down menu (there’s probably a shortcut key for this but I don’t recall what it is and am not on a PC with Photoshop at the moment).

2. When the new layer is added in the palette, it should now be the active (selected) layer. If not, just click on the layer to make it active.

3. Now, in your image area, create objects as you like (presuming by objects you’re referring to vector shapes) or perform other raster edits (paintbrush, blur, sharpen, erase, etc., etec.).

If you feel you’re doing things "almost" right, you probably are missing a minor step. For example, if you’re creating an object but can’t see it, check to ensure the active layer is a higher layer on the Layers Palette than others which might have a opacity that obscures the "object" layer.

And, while it may seem trivial, make certain you’ve not accidentally hidden the layer you’re trying to work with…the eye icon to the left of the layer should be visible.

Hope that helps some,

Daryl
