Recently when I move the cursor or press a key and expect the function of the cursor to change I have been experiencing a long (2-3 second) delay. I have run RegCure, Ad-Aware Personal, CounterSpy 2.0, and run an antivirus and 2-way firewall full time. I have no indication of malware on my system. I ran MemTest86+, Version 1.70 overnight and did not find any errors.

Examples:

Using the Healing Tool. When I press Alt I expect the brush to change to a source sampler (concentric circles with cross hairs). Sometimes it seems to take even more than three seconds. This is maddening and kills my productivity. Worse, I sometimes release the mouse thinking I had obtained the source cursor then attempt to pan and create a streak through the image I’m working on. On occasions I sadly discover the streak after extensive editing on another part of the image. No undo.

Spacebar-drag to pan the zoomed-in image. The delay occurs before the "hand" appears allowing me to pan the image. When multiple pans are needed the delay occurs with each instance.

When moving the mouse pointer out of the image to choose a tool, layer, or action the pointer disappears. This can incur a delay of easily up to three seconds before the cursor reappears as a pointer over the control I wish to use.

I’m not noticing anything like this delay in other applications. Please, please, please- any suggestions?

Thanks,

– Dave McKeen

David,

The actions you are seeing the problems in can be very memory intensive and I have seen similar problems on machines, admittingly, with only a quarter of your RAM.
You could try running Takmanager>Performance and see what is happening when the delay starts, CPU and Commit charge hitting the limit etc., How much RAM have you allocated to PS?
How many history states do you have? 20? You could try reducing these to see if anything changes.
Is this a recent problem or been around for a while?
Have you tried deleteing your preference file? Start PS with the control, alt and shift keys held down. If you get the timing right you will be asked if you want to delete the file. You do, a new one will be created at start up.
Another thing, I experinced a speed boost when I dumped my 160 GB EIDE drive and only used sATA’a. It was configured as master and I didn’t bother trying as a slve to see if there was any difference.

First thing to try would be to uninstall your MS Intellipoint software and see if that helps. If not, we can try some other things…

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your suggestion. I didn’t install any supporting software when I started using the trackball. I’m just using it as a mouse with native Windows drivers. Any suggestions on what I could check out next?
