Can someone please humor my ignorance here and explain to me why, when I crop an image and specify a width and height (but no resolution) Photoshop changes the resolution of the image but if I don’t specify a width and height, it doesn’t change the resolution?

I know I can get around this "problem" by either using the marquee selection or specifying a resolution when I crop (if there’s another way, I’m open to knowlege) but I’m just curious about this behavior.

Because PS will not resample the image.

So say the area you crop is 1000 pixels long and your specified 10" in length (in the crop tool options) you end up with:

1000 px / 10" = 100 ppi

If the resolution of your document was not 100 ppi, you see the resolution change. NOTE: there was no interpolation
