Strange artifacts in BW converted stitches from CS3

These patterns arise when you convert a Photomerge stitch to monochrome using the BW converter in CS3. They’re found in dark, smooth sky areas along the stitch boundaries.

The artifacts look similar to banding, but do not appear to be density-related contours. They’re radiating patterns sometimes originating at the image edge and covering a fairly large area. They’re almost impossible to hide.

Workflow:
I flatten the original stitch so I can use Warp to adjust the image boundaries, then use BW convert on the warped image. The artifacts appear with BW presets or manual adjustments and converting the flattened image to 16 bit before converting has no effect. Converting to BW before stitching possibly change the patterns,(more testing needed) but does not eliminate them.

Anyone else seen these? Any ideas on how to avoid ’em?

I’ve seen this when trying to feather a selection at a high pixel count vs a low resolution image (RGB too) – you end up with a banding effect. I just lowered the feather amount and/or used a higher res image to do the work on. Can you use higher resolution files? Just a SWAT…
