Saving Photoshop back to older versions?

I have been working more and more with Photoshop users in Europe, mostly France and Belgium. It seems that that no matter if they are on a Mac or PC, even if its new machine, they are using version 7 of Photoshop.

I am sure we could talk forever about the social and technical ramifications of that, but my issue is that I am using CS 2 version and I would like to send them a version of a .psd file that will retain layers and that they can open. So far every thing I have tried has ended up flattened at their end.

I understand much else will be lost but layers were in that version and it was only 2 versions back. What is going on with Adobe? I have used Photoshop since the dawn of time and it was always great at saving backwards with the understandable caveats.

Can anyone shed any useful light on this issue? Like how…

They should open fine with layers but without any fancy new features, "Smart Objects" and the like.

How are you sending them?

There is no "saving to an earlier version".
