Hi,

I’m new to image editing and now using PhotoShop CS3. I am planning to buy a new notebook with an external LCD display, and appreciate if you can give me some suggestions when using along with PhotoShop for image editing. PS: I am an intermediate computer user so I’m ok with most computer terms. Also, both the notebook and display are intended to use around 4 years of time without major upgrades – unless I win a lotto 🙂

Notebook: Dell Precision M65 entry level workstations – Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0G, 2G RAM, 256MB dedicated NVIDIA QuadroR FX 350M, 15’’ display with 1920 X 1200 resolution.

Questions:
I was told some time ago that using notebook LCD is not very good for image editing. I don’t know if that’s true (part of reasons for buying an external display)?

Do you think this system is capable of doing some image editing (not professional photographer) for a web site and so on apart from the display maybe is an issue?

Also, this model does not have a DVI output, and does it really matter for using VGA vs. DVI? I have searched and studied some articles, and some suggested it is not that different now. Any comments?

LCD display:

I am thinking to buy one of the three Dell models: 2407WFP (most expensive, 24” 1920×1200, UltraSharp), 2007WFP (20” 1680×1050 UltraSharp), E228WFP (22” 1680×1050).

Appreciate anyone can share your experience with any of the three models when using with PhotoShop.

Apart from resolutions, what else do I need to look at when selecting a display?

If I must make tradeoffs between the price and screen size, features, and so on, what will be my best bet? For examples, shall I go for medium priced 22” (E228WFP) for a larger screen asset or a smaller 20” but with more features such as UltraSharp? I wish to have 2407 but may exceed the budget.

Since both will be purchased mainly for PhotoShop and image editing, so appreciate your comments and suggestions with regard of the application and the task.

Finally, what are some reasons for using an external display when editing images? I often read this is a common practice for designers but not often for others.

PS: You could simply provide links of the resources, and I will be more than happy to study from there.

Many thanks in advance.

I love the 24" Dell. It’s on sale at the small business side right now for $569. Free shipping and a three year warranty.

And no…I have no financial interest in Dell.
