Can’t get white background, new projects start yellow

Whenver I start something new, even when I choose the background to be white, it still shows up like a yellow color. Anyone know how to fix this?

Run Adobe Gamma or other monitor calibration. Look in Help for information about calibrating your monitor.

How do you define background color – in the "New Document" dialog or by choosing "Background" color in the Toolbox?

Funny, a friend came to me to ask the same question this morning, and I’m a little stumped too.

He said he’s installing an older version (5.5?) of Photoshop on a PC running XP. The whites in the document (not the menus) look yellow, which seems like it would rule out hardware issues. When he checks the color, it says it’s a RGB 255/255/255 white. When printed, it prints in yellow. Other software displays white correctly.

Maybe a color setting or proof setting is incorrect? Any ideas?
