When I attach my Canon 30D to my computer (sony Vaio laptop) PhotoShop CS asks which fotos I want to import but only shows the 2 jpgs on the camera, not the hundred or so RAW. This is the first time I’ve shot in RAW.

Hi Brooke,

Adobe stopped updating the Camera Raw plugin in Photoshop CS after CS2 came out, so it depends on when the 30D was first brought out whether it will be in the latest version of ACR that CS coulod use. I think it was 2.4 and it came out early in 2005.

If you don’t have the latest version of ACR you can find it here;

If you already have this version, you will need to use the camera’s raw coverter, a third party converter or upgrade to a new version of Photoshop or Elements.

Hope this helps.

She could also use the DNG converter.

George and Buko,
Thanks for the ideas. I downloaded the Camera Raw And DNG 3.7. That didn’t seem to do the trick.

Am I supposed to have Bridge on the CS2; shouldn’t it open in that? I guess third party software or an upgrade are possibilities; I’d rather not spend the money though, when I thought what I had with PS-CS2 would do the trick. But that’s how they get you right, never ending upgrades.

To show what a newbie I am: What is ARC?

If you have any flashes of inspiration let me know.
thanks again,
Brooke

ACR is Adobe Camera Raw. The 30D came out after the last version of ACR for PsCS, so you can’t open the RAW files directly. Get the very latest DNG converter, which will support the 30D, convert your files to DNG, and then you can open the DNG files from PsCS using ACR.

Hi Brooke,

In your original post, you asked about Photoshop CS. In you last post you asked about Photoshop CS2. As I said in my first response, ACR in CS was not updated after CS2 came out. So it is important to know which version you are using.

If you have CS, then the Canon 30D is not supported in ACR.

If you have CS2, then the Canon 30D has been supported in ACR since Version 3.4.

What exactly do you mean by "I downloaded the Camera Raw And DNG 3.7. That didn’t seem to do the trick."

Yes you do have a version of Bridge. It is installed at the same time you installed Photoshop. You start it by clicking in the Bridge icon at the top centre of the application window. It sits next to the Tool Presets Tab in the Well. You can also start it from the windows program menu.

Are you saying that yo installed it correctly and you still couldn’t open your 30D raw files?

Where did you install the plugin? The location of the ACR plugin changed in CS2. This is now the location on a standard installation.

Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS2\File Formats

Do you have any other raw conversion software on your system. Sometimes the camera maker will install its own converter, and this can sometimes block Photoshop from using the ACR plugin. If you do, temporarily remove them and try again.

Hope this helps.
