This is concerning backward stepping (CTRL+ALT+Z) in CS3.

It is my understanding that by default, stepping backwards from changes on one layer will now revert the selected layer to any layer that has been previously selected.

I would like to know if there is any way to turn this feature OFF and go back to how backwards stepping worked in previous versions of photoshop where stepping backwards did not make an arbitrary decision to revert layers.

My studio is migrating to CS3 and the change in the functionality has been causing workflow issues expecially in extremely layer dense projects.

Kindly do not suggest using the single state undo (CTRL+Z) or the history tab. Both are too slow for the workflow we require.

That is unfortunate. Thank you for the reply.

Working layer dense texture maps needs this feature for an efficient workflow. In the last work week we’ve had to trash a lot of work because details constantly ended up on the wrong layers.

Not a safe way to work. Seems we’ll be reverting to CS2 then.

PS7 and CS also act that way. I somehow doubt CS2 doesn’t do the same thing…

No can do. CS2 is exactly the same in this respect.

My bad. You are correct. CS does that.

7 however does not.
