In another thread, earlier today, I was asking opinions about why I was having some filter problems with large files… but, apart from analyzing what was at the root of the problem, I’ve definitely determined that there are some color filters I would like to use on large files that simply can’t function even with around 1.7 gigs allocated to PS. So, here’s my question…

Is there any way I could apply these filters to a smaller version of the same file, record the color alterations make to the file in a curve or something, then apply that curve or info to the larger file without actually running the filter? I have no problem with PS handling curves or any adjustments with huge files, so, if there were some way of mapping the color changes then applying them to another file, I’d be all set.

The filters I’m talking about modify color though calculation that I haven’t been able to reproduce in a reasonable amount of ajustments or curve modification. Of course, I guess I could ultimately modify an image to create the same effects by modifying small selected color ranges until I got the same results, but, given the complexity of the color effects, this could take a ton more time than just applying a filter. (And, besides, I’ll admit it… sometimes I don’t know what I want until I play enough with a filter and see something I like.)

Anyway, I don’t know if any technique exists that can map the color changes made to an image by a complex filter, but, if it existed, it would solve my problem, so I thought I’d ask. If it exists, it’s something I’ve never discovered.

Sounds exactly like what xRes used to do. Is there anything on the market like that anymore?

Curve? No.

But you can sometimes apply filters to the individual channels of a file and get the same results as when applying to the composite channels. But that only works with filters that don’t have a random component or use the image data as part of their input.
