I have been using Photoshop Elements 6 for a few years now. Recently, I decided to upgrade to Photoshop CS (yes, the first one). However, I found out I needed a version of Photoshop, not Elements if I wanted to do this. So I purchases Photoshop 5.0 off ebay and have since filled out all the license transfer papers.

I also purchased, new in box, Adobe Photoshop CS upgrade. After some confusion installing Photoshop 5.0 (It seems I needed to install Mac Classic on my laptop here before I could install such an old program), I’ve finally got it installed. Now however, when I put in the CS disc to get that installed, I can’t install it. I open up the installation file off the disc, I enter my admin password, and then it says "Authenticating Installer, Please Wait…". It shows that text in a grey bar then ends there. The "Photoshop CS Installer" icon on the Dock also shuts down.

I spent the last day or so looking around the net and I haven’t found anyone else with this exact problem. I found similar problems and tried their remedies, I made sure my clock is set to the right time, I reset the computer a few times, and I’ve even tried clearing all my internet cookies and cache. No luck. I can’t install a program I just paid 300 dollars for and Adobe support won’t be back till monday and I need to get this program up and running ASAP. Can anyone help me?

I’m running Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 on an IBook G4. I grew up with PC’s and don’t know enough about Macs to figure this out. If you need any more info just ask. Thank you very much in advance!

Photoshop 1 thur 6 had a 17 digit serial comprised of letters and numbers. It was the same number for each version. Now you get a new 24 digit number for each version.

the problem is that you need a 24 digit number for the upgrade. Because you could upgrade from older versions Customer service had to help you with the install when you went from the 17 digit number to the new 24 digit number.

PS 7 upgrade was the only version that accepted the old 17 digit number. You will need to call customer service. whether they will help you at this late stage is another story.

CS is the last version in the upgrade path now. It would be best for you to upgrade to CS4 now so you can stay in the upgrade path.

So you’re saying I need to call customer service to get this installed? I purchased these programs all legally and want to be able to use CS as quickly as possible. I don’t have the money to buy CS4, and I don’t really have the need. CS will suit my needs just fine.

Yes!

Yes, you need to obtain a proper working serial number for Ps 5.x. The one it comes with does not help you upgrade to CS.

Be advised that if the CS copy you bought has or had been used and registered with Adobe by someone else you’ll be severely out of luck. Same goes for your copy of Ps 5. In either case, you’ll need to submit a Transfer of License form signed by the original owner, including a letter of destruction of all subsequent versions that person may have upgraded to using that earlier version. Customer Service will explain further.

I have the signed and filled out letter of license transfer for the Photoshop 5 as that program was indeed used before me. The CS1 though was purchased brand new and unopened.

I have a question though. If what you say is true, that I cannot upgrade it properly because the older versions of photoshop use a different key system, shoudn’t every single other person who upgraded to CS have had this same problem?

yes that’s why they had to call Customer service.

Not if they didn’t skip a couple of upgrades. 🙂

Adobe Customer Service is going to want to receive a faxed or scanned copy of that letter before issuing you a new 24-digit number.

The CS1 though was purchased brand new and unopened.

Then you should be OK in that second step.

If what you say is true,

Now why in blazes would we lie to you? Or are you suggesting that answers users get here are unreliable? :/

Oh. I didn’t mean to say that you’re lying. I didn’t mean it like that. I was just curious if that was indeed the right issue here. Like I said, I did a few hours of searching myself before asking here and I didn’t find many other with a similar problem and thus I wanted to make sure that was the correct answer. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hint that you guys don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve been on forums in the past, both asking for help and giving it, and sometimes people can misread a problem and give an answer that doesn’t apply.

I won’t be able to fax anything in until Monday as I don’t have a fax machine at my home. And yeah, I know I’m skipping a few upgrades here. Any dollar I can save is a great thing to have, and this was the least expensive route to getting a decent photo editing program (that I know of). Thank you again guys for your time, if I cannot resolve this issue on monday I’ll update this thread.

You can scan it and send them a JPEG in an email (wait until you have a ticket number from Customer Service, though). Transfers of license can take from a few days to a couple of weeks after they receive the LOD (letter of destruction) and Transfer letter. Don’t despair.

I suggest you look at the upgrade now to CS4.

One reason is if you have a Mac with an Intel chip you are running in Rosetta, a Power PC emulation environment just like Classic in in OSX.0 thru .4.

If you are going to get a new Mac it will come with 10.5 or 10.6 depending when you buy it. CS and CS2 will not be supported under 10.5 or newer, neither will Adobe spend any time making these apps compatible.

CS is now the last version that will qualify for an upgrade to CS4 as soon as CS5 is released CS will be out of the loop.

Just something to think about.

Well, I called support today. Wasn’t exactly the news I was hoping for. They told me that they no longer sell or do support for Photoshop CS and I’m, more or less, out of luck.

However, I was told that I can upgrade from my current set up to CS4 for only 199 and I may end up having to do that. I have already purchased and am waiting to use Pro Select in conjunction with photoshop, but I need CS or newer to use it. I have Elements 6 but Pro Select doesn’t work with that.

Sigh. Wasn’t what I was hoping for but this is something I NEED to have now, it’s no longer a simple wish. I have a whole lot of sessions booked for the upcoming months and it takes way too long with my old software and I can’t keep up.
