I am considering the purchase of a new computer. I have Photoshop CS2, and I am debating whether to get Windows Vista or Windows XP Pro. I have read in the database about Vista and CS2, "Installs and runs with minimal known issues." But it also states under Support for Windows Vista, "not officially." So I am wondering whether anyone has PSCS2 running under Vista, and what kinds of problems you’ve encountered? Thank you.

I had CS2 running fine under Vista Ultimate before I upgraded to CS3 (for the new features not Vista compatibility). The only issue I can recall is that you need to make sure the ‘use OS dialog’ button is selected in the file dialogs, and not ‘use Adobe dialog’.

The computer I’m looking at runs Vista Home Premium. Anyone have any experience with that?

I’m having a problem with Photoshop CS2 in Vista…

I cannot see or access my network drives? Could anyone shed some light on this issue?

Everything else works fine, but I store all of my images on a server for backup purposes, so I really need to figure out a fix.

If you could… point me in the right direction or email me at

Thanks!

Craig,

I just launched PS CS2 under WinVista Ultimate, browsed to another PC on my wireless home network, opened a 5MB file and resaved it again to the networked PC. I then closed and reopened PS CS2 in case that might be affected by a file history that included a networked file, and reopened the file via the Open Recent list. I saw no problems at all. So, it seems for me that access to and edit of a networked drive works fine, albeit more slowly than a locally saved file. I’m not sure if there would be anything unique to a server in comparison to a regular networked PC or not.

Cheryl,

Adding to what Charlie said, I could find nothing about a "use OS dialog" or "use Adobe dialog" option, so I did a Google search on that and learned this is related to using Version Cue, which I’ve never used. By enabling Use Version Cue Workgroup File Management in the Photohsop preferences, those dialog options become available. All I can say based upon that is I have seen no problems with PS CS2 under Vista with Version Cue disabled. Although I’m using Vista Ultimate, my experience with it leaves me thinking there should be no problems with Vista Premium either.

Regards,

Daryl

I have come across a severe Photoshop CS2 incompatibility with Vista.

One of my printers is an Epson Stylus R310, which prints on both paper and disc. While this model has been on the market for a number of years, many people are still using it, especially those who, like me, have added a continuous-flow ink system to it.

Epson appears to have sat back meekly and allowed Microsoft, whose programming limitations know no bounds, to produce a Vista ‘driver’ for the R310. Epson even proudly announces on its various international sites that the driver is ‘In-box’.

This so-called driver is so poor that Epson has had to release a PDF that shows how to fool the printer into printing to disc when using Epson’s own CD Print software under Vista. The Epson XP driver automatically switches the printer dialogue to CD mode, but with the Vista CD workaround the paper mode is retained on screen and it is not until the printer reacts in CD configuration that a user knows that the workaround has worked.

When it comes to Photoshop no workaround seems possible. Print Preview just doesn’t work as it does under XP. It is not possible to switch printers, so the target printer has to be made the default so that a preview appears. Otherwise, the user is stuck with the default. In my case, I have used the Photoshop preview box under XP to switch from my default A4/A3 mono laser if I want to use the R310 or my HP 1220. Epson Support’s reaction to this situation is that it is up to Photoshop to change.

Problems such as these with the R310 under Vista no doubt apply to many other printers whose Vista drivers carry the dreaded ‘(M)’ in their name.

This leads to a question of my own. I am wondering whether CS3 has tackled this problem of using truncated Microsoft Vista printer drivers with Photoshop. Can anyone enlighten me?

Interesting. I didn’t realize I had that turned on, it’s off now. 😉 —

I think Version Cue is enabled by default Charlie. But, whenever I install PS, I run through all the settings and turn off those I know I don’t need or which I don’t expect to need, so I’m sure I disabled Version Cue in the process. I just never made the connection between it and your comments about the Adobe/OS dialog choices until my Google search was done.

Firstly let me apologise if this is not the right thread to post this problem. I use PSCS2 on my PC under xp no problems and recently bought a laptop for mobility. I installed PSCS2 on my laptop running Vista used plugins etc and it ran great except when I clicked on help it kept coming up with an error message like cant find help file or something. I updated with latest program update from adobe and that still didnt help. I uninstalled and then reinstalled, updated again but still didnt give me help access. So I decided not to wory about the help feature. Then I tried to use plugins and PSCS2 screen fades and freezes and I have to opt out of program. This didnt happen the first time I installed, however I am beginning to think maybe the update had something to do with it? Anyone know?

I’ve been running Photoshop CS2 since last spring on Vista. No problems ever. I have one thing – but I don’t really consider this a "problem" – help won’t open unless I’m online. (in response to one of the other posters)

My Canon printer I was able to get going. It’s rather ancient – 7 years? or so – a Multipass copier/scanner/printer works now. I went to Canon’s support site for drivers and sent them an email. They no longer officially support my model, but sent me info on how to set it in DOS mode and use an emulation driver – and it works just peachy.

Vista opens CS2 in a backwards compatible color mode, but still it runs fine. The screen blinks abit when I turn it off, but just going back to "normal" vista. It does it too when I open 3D studio max 9.

Save by buying Vista now and using CS2 or Buy XP and have to spend on CS3 AND Vista later. We end up paying at some point.

I’ve been running PSCS2 under Vista Ultimate 32 & 64-bit without any problems whatsoever. I also have 2600 active fonts and a network printer as the default.

Vista should have it’s first service pack ready in the next couple of weeks.

That first service pack is non-event. If you’ve been updating along the way you’ve already got the first service pack.

But I agree, the more I use Vista the more I like it. Very stable and with my hardware very very fast.

i’m sure it’s great if you have no choice, i.e. your system builder forces it on you, i just don’t see the benefit of upgrading now when a new os is due from MS next year. and reports over and over again say xp outperform vista in almost every category. and reports also state that sp3 for xp is going to make that performance gap even wider.

I had a choice since I was the system builder. I’m not saying everyone should run out and buy a copy…that’s just crazy…but this "Vista sucks" mentality out there seems to be coming from people who don’t even use it.

And benchmark tests are fine as a general idea, but they’re not real world.

there there bob. it’s ok. i’m sure as soon as windows 7 comes out they’ll have a 12 step vista recovery program available. 🙂

but this "Vista sucks" mentality out there seems to be coming from people who don’t even use it.

well i get mine from the same well respected trusted sources i’ve been using to evaluate the latest and greatest since the dos days. so just because i haven’t used it (extensively) doesn’t mean i don’t know anything about it. i trust the people who’ve steered me right in the past. that said, i went against the grain and installed windows Me and you know what? i liked it better than 98se. i never had any of the problems that many had, with the "new" system restore feature for example. most likely because i take care of my systems every time i log on, as you and i.d. probably do too. but i’m not going to rush out and jump on an os that the manufacturer has basically abandoned (no push at CES?!! WOW!), when they’ve basically said, hang on, help’s’a’comin! 🙂

sorry, just wanted to add also, i’m not going to recommend basic to average users install it either just to have them go through a new learning curve when windows 7 comes out. for experienced users – fine. no problem going fishing for drivers etc. but do you want aunt kathy to be futzing with all that then just when she’s getting it down whoops! time to switch! there’s something too "mad hatter tea party-ish" about that.

What makes you think that I’ll be upgrading to Windows 7? I enjoyed WIN2K since it came out and moved to Vista with the new system, I’m sure that Vista will be the stepping stone to the next Win OS and I will be enjoying what it has to offer before it is released.

1st run after a boot, about 10 seconds. if i’ve run it before since i’ve booted (usually reboot when there are updates, so what’s that every couple weeks to about a month between reboots) 3-5 secs.

e6600 core2duo, 2 gig ram.

4 seconds/3 seconds. That damned Vista is sooooooo slow.

Remember that site I sent you to, Autopatcher. Microsoft shut them down last September with threats of a lawsuit. Clever bunch they are, they’re working on a variation to continue.

That’s about the same load times as I get on my laptop with Vista Business, 1G RAM, 1.4GHz Pentium M. Not exactly major hardware.

I was wondering if someone here could help me. I just purchased a new computer with windows vista and I cant install photoshop cs2 in it. It works fine in my old computer which has XP.
Everytime I click setup a little window pops up where I should be able to chose a country but in vista it’s just white and I cant do anything.

Should I be able to install photoshop or might it not work with vista?
