Layers Lost

I created a photoshop file for an ad with the text in different layers from the image. I saved the file on a portable scan disk. I could re-open the file fine with all the layers intact. However, when I took the disk to the printer, the layers were all flattened into a single background layer. What happened? Are there settings on their end that could cause this?

if they’re using an app that doesn’t support those layers (like an older version of photoshop or something else that reads psd files) it’s looking at the composite (flattened) data.

you don’t say what format you’re sending images to the printer as. psd? tif? jpg? (jpg doesn’t support layers!)

Sorry for lack of detail. I’m using CS2 and left the maximize compatibility box checked when I did a save as. The file is .psd.

and what are they using to open the file? if it’s an older version of PS, that might explain why it’s reading the composite data (that max compat saves) as the text engine changes almost every version.

if it’s some other program besides photoshop that might also explain why it reads the flattened data.

Dave, thanks for your feedback. The printshop is using photoshop, but I’m not there and my wife is doing the talking with them. They don’t seem to even know how to find out the version, but it’s not CS2. I’m pretty sure versioning is the issue at this point. I’m fairly new to photoshop so didn’t know if there could be something else or how well the maximize compatibility setting actually works. Sounds like not well enough. Will post again when/if we get this solved. Again, thanks.

well if it’s an older version of ps, then the max compatability IS working based on the fact they can open your file! ask if they take other formats like layerd tiff files.

actually for that matter, why do you want the printer to have access to your layer data? i don’t think they should be editing your files, no? (especially if they don’t know enough to tell you what version of the software they’re running (hint: it’s on the startup and help> about screens))

Dave, version was the issue. They opened the file with a newer version of photoshop and the layering was preserved. I know where the version is located, but my wife was the one talking to the printer and there was a time lag going on between the posts. As to the why, we wanted them to change the font to something we don’t have. Thanks again for taking the time to help. We really appreciate it.
