Physically unplug your internet/network cable.
Go to HELP…Updates.
Let it do whatever it does, then click on the Updater preferences.
Disable any automatic checking.
Get your updates manually, from the Adobe site.
Thanks Phos.., that’s exactly what I did. Still, it does not cure the issue, it only treats it symptomatically. There is an article in the Adobe Tech Notes that suggests 3 other solution, none of which works either. I would really like to know what is causing this annoying behavior.
So, don’t run the Update from inside of Photoshop. At all.
Make a note to check for updates manually.
In my case I cannot even change the Update options. Just clicking on "Help -> Updates" brings up a "Restarting your computer is required" dialog box. I’ve tried every combinattion I could think of (cable in, cable unplugged, reboot, no reboot etc) and nothing gets rid of it. I also get the d*mn dialog box every time my PC starts up, but I’m not using Version Cue so I am baffled. Any suggestions gladly received.
Same problem here but it happens whether I click HELP>Check for updates in Acrobat Pro, Acrobat Reader, Photoshop, and LightRoom. Started when I updated to Acrobat 8.1

I had this very same issue, and have been working for week to find a solution. Finding that it was an Adobe update that had not completed successfully was the key to the solution, it is actually a Adobe Reader 8.1 updated that has caused this. I attempted a repair but it did not help.
Firstly, un-install all Adobe Reader programs, then reboot. Secondly, download and install the latest Adobe Reader, and reboot. Third, don’t run any other applications or reboot the computer until Adobe Reader has completed its updates.
I no longer have this "Reboot Required" message.

I have the same problem! But I dont even have Reader installed at all.
