I hope it’s OK to resurrect this thread with a slightly different take. I want to know how hard it is to make BW images that are highly stylized. Similar to the animated film Renaisance. Here’s a sample image on IMBd.com: <http://tinyurl.com/35h2bc>

Would it be hard to turn photos into images like that?

Thanks

Martin

Try Image>Adjustments>Threshold.

Thanks Ed

Combining that with the "Find Edges" filter works better but starting with a photo seems to reproduce much more detail than wanted which then makes the image not look like an illustration. Maybe I should look in the Illustrator forum although, I find Illy more mysterious that PS!

Apply a Gaussian blur the photo, then apply the threshold.

note: Renaissance was 3D animation, and the models had a lot less detail than reality.

It is not easy creating sofisticated artwork on the scale of Renaissance, but I’ve made a free action that can convert Photos or drawings into vector artwork in Photoshop: <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.1de5f905.3bb3a081>

Some examples (from web-sized images): <http://www.96ppi.net/vectorizer/ches/>

The unusual trick here in determining the level of detail is the dodge / burn layer, where you can paint with low opacities black and white to extract or remove detail.

Hi – I know it’s not inside PSCS2 but have you tried Art Master Pro?

Glowing edges/invert/desaturate/add contrast to taste –
or
Get buZZ Pro and use the Simplifier and Edges Mono settings to produce a line drawing – or
get a Wacom tablet and use a Pattern brush (eg oil small tip) with a desaturated image. That’s one of the approaches I used here:
