Please help me figure out if this is user error or a bug.

None of my brush or pencil strokes are appearing. I’ve tried new files, tiffs, jpegs. I’ve tried new layers, changed opacity, played with foreground and background colors. Nothing appears even though the history palette shows a brush stroke has been made.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jeff

Check the brush options.

What’s the opacity setting?

What about transfer mode?

You may want to reset the brush tool

Are you using a Wacom tablet?

John,

Thanks a million. I knew it was something simple. I never use the palette and it has been tucked away out of sight and forgotten almost since I got the thing as a birthday present. However, it was still plugged in! So I unplugged it, uninstalled the driver, and all works fine.

Thanks,
Jeff

The Point that John Joslin made (IMO) was not that a Wacom tablet and driver is the sole cause of the trouble, but particularly the pen still laying on the tablet, thus actively "hijacking" the cursor.

Rob:

I think John meant something else, but it is a moot point. The fact is that the pencil was in its stand and my normal mouse functions were working just fine. The only thing I couldn’t do with my main mouse was any kind of brush stroke in PS.

After pulling the Wacom tablet out and using either its mouse or pencil the brush strokes would appear. After unplugging the tablet and uninstalling the driver my main mouse worked just fine.

I’m sure there is a setting somewhere in the Wacom driver or in PS that would allow both mouse and Wacom to function, but I don’t use the tablet so didn’t waste my time.

Sometimes the pen will get sensed as active even if it’s in its stand, if it’s too close to the tablet. Moving it away will restore normal brush action.

I will keep all this in mind when/if I decide to ever use the tablet again.

Jeff,

Both the tablet and the mouse should work without exclusions. They do here: I can paint with the mouse, only without pressure sensitivity of course.
