I am running photoshop CS3 Extended on a system with 3 screens with a total screen resolution of 4800×1200. Whenever Photoshop’s main window size exceeds roughly 4000 pixels, Photoshop crashes (Photoshop.exe needs to close…)

I discovered this problem while using CS2 and created a post about it then, but I can’t locate it now. The bug seems to have come over to CS3 as well. Photoshop 7 works fine at window sizes beyond 4000 pixels.

I contacted tech support, a guy named Greg who was very responsive and helpful, and he sent me a readme file for CS3 that mentions a limit of 4096×4096. It turns out that this is referring to texture maps in 3d not window size, so as far as I know, this issue is still undocumented.

With most modern high end PCs being capable of displaying resolutions this high, this issue is going to get noticed by more people soon.

AfterEffects 7 also has this issue.

I don’t know what to tell you. I just setup a 3 monitor system using Windows Vista, 2 ATI Radeon 1650 PCI Express cards with 512MB. I created a 10,000 x 1000 pixel size document as 75 dpi. I then spread that document Windows across all three monitors and then zoomed it to 1600. The monitors are two 19" and one widescreen 22". The 19"s are set at: 1280×1024 and the 22" is set at: 1680×1050. I had no problems.

I also tried stretching the un-maximized Photoshop application windows across all three monitors and then creating the same sized document. I zoom it this time to 3200% and still no problems.

I am wondering if you don’t have a display driver issue?

Robert:

It is very encouraging to hear that you can stretch the main photoshop window beyond 4000 pixels.

It seems that there are two primary differences between our systems:

ATI vs Nvidia

Windows Vista vs WindowsXP

Is there any way we can narrow this down, does any one else out there have any experience with this?

On your end Matt make sure you have the latest bios and drivers for your video card. I am also wondering if this might not be a limit to the amount of memory your video card has. Maybe for the give resolution and color depth you are having it just doesn’t then have enough memory to do what you want. Though honestly that doesn’t make real sense. It would seem to me that if it can get to that resolution and color depth then it should be able to display nearly anything at that resolution.

The only way I could see this making any sense is if you are using Photoshop CS3 Extended. Then it might be possible the new 3D aspect of it would then require more video card memory since handling 3D is very much a part f the video cards processor and memory. Maybe it doesn’t have enough memory left. This would I would think be in effect even if you weren’t currently working in 3D as the Photoshop CS3 Extended display would still be designed to show 3D should you in the middle of a 2D project open and manipulate a 3D object. I don’t know I think only Adobe could answer that.

Right now I would go with the bios and drivers being a problem. So do make sure you have the latest of those. Also, mouse or tablet (if your using a tablet) would be something to make sure is updated as well as both would be dealing with the screen size and window size as you were dragging the window to a larger size.
