I searched the forums and knowledge base for information on this, but came up empty.

I have both Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom and will be installing them on my Windows XP computer. This PC currently has Photoshop CS2 installed and has all the current updates from MS. The system has enough hard drive space to allow CS2 to be retained until CS3 settles in. The beta releases of Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom were not installed on this system.

The question is about the installation order of the two programs. I understand that Photoshop may delete some, if not all of the choices in the "What do you want Windows to do" box that appears after a USB device is inserted. The current settings, as determined by TweakUI, have been recorded, so returning the original options should not be a problem. I also understand that Lightroom will start each time any new device is detected, and am aware of the fix for this.

Other than taking an image of the boot drive, does anyone have a recommendation on what actions should be performed before installation? Also does anyone know of a recommended installation order?

Thanks,

Holley

It should not matter at all in which order they are installed. However, since most people who use Lightroom likely already had Photoshop installed you might as well install CS3 first and then Lightroom.

This would also ensure that CS3 becomes the default Photoshop version within Lightroom.

if no preference is specified by the manufacturer (in this case, adobe) i always go with installing the NEWEST product LAST.

Thanks Wolf and Dave. Here are my results.

Installed CS3 then Lightroom, and the item "Edit in CS3" was not on the menu that appears when a picture is right clicked in the library module of Lightroom.

Removed and reinstalled Lightroom, and still no "Edit in CS3" item.

Repaired CS3, and the menu item to "Edit in CS3" was available in Lightroom.

Conclusion. If Lightroom is already installed, CS3 registers itself with the Lightroom program during the CS3 is installation. If Lightroom is installed last, it does not pickup up the fact that CS3 is already on the system. Don’t understand it, but that’s the way it happened for me.

Also, on this machine editing the registry with TweakUI was not required.
