I can cut and paste parts of a picture, place it in a background, question is this: how do I smoothe out the cut, so, the pasted image isn’t so defined?? (sharp)

Can someone help me?

Before you select the area you want to cut out, look in the Option Bar for the selection tools, and set ‘Feathering’ to some value greater than zero. You can also add Feathering after you make the selection, via the Select menu.

I was looking for feather, which I thought I would find in the liquify filter. Please don’t laugh, I’m new at getting the "perfect" cut. Can you tell me where I find "feathering"??

The cut I did and then put 5 people on a white canvas, then put them all on a background as a group-it didn’t blend in well, you can see a silver outline on the cut as the group. I guess a number 3 would be best??

John already told you two places!

Feathering is a very basic function. As well as reading the replies people take the time to write here, you might want to look through the help files. By getting to know the program’s basics, you’ll enjoy the ride much more.

I’d also recommend you experiment with the Extract Filter which is designed to blend the edges and avoid that "cut out" look.

Sorry this makes no sense at all.

Thank you all for responding.

Chris, thanks for responding. Like I said, I’m not very experienced at this-so why are you yelling at me?? I did forget to put the "marching ants" around the picture and then I could get feathering, my mistake, sorry!!

I pulled out my video rented from the Library and learned the extract-this works so much better!!! One question on that though?? I noticed on one of the images I worked on and placed it on a background, the face looks a bit jagged (pixels sticking out) is the only way I know to describe this. However, after extracting, I did the steps for select, contract, inverse, hide by Ctrl and h., gaussian blur.

Now here’s the question: if you do a little too much on gaussian blur, can that have that effect?? This didn’t come out that way on the image alone, this is why I am asking this.

I have a correction on this question, this happens when I do Ctrl and T., then use the handles to make the picture fit into the background.

How can I avoid that?? Should I just resize the image smaller??

so why are you yelling at me??

Read my response again Mary. I’m not yelling, I’m trying to help you. All I’m saying is that the Help Files (and videos and Tutorials) are a great way to get the basics under your belt.

I noticed on one of the images I worked on and placed it on a background, the face looks a bit jagged

It sound as if you are working on files which are pretty low resolution. If you have to increase the size of an image, you are spreading the image data more thinly and pixelation will occur. "Transform" is not the best way to upres anyway. Image>Image Size works best, choosing "Bicubic Smoother" as the interpolation algorithm.

Never resize more than once. If you need to juggle with the size when pasting an image into another one, use the "Place" command instead. the image will be brought in as a "Smart Object" which will allow you to keep adjusting the size without undue pixel damage.

Thanks Chris and I truly do appreciate your help. The image sizes I have are quite large their different sizes no larger than 1300 and no smaller than 1000-both numbers here are in width. for the background I made the size 995widthx580height. I’m not familiar with Placing?? and it’s hard to know the size of the image in height and width, I don’t want them all standing at the same height.

So, I guess it’s ok to move one pic into the background, resize and if the size dosen’t work, then undo image size and keep doing that until the size is good and then I can move it?? Just want to make sure I do the right thing here.

The problem is that, like many people here, you seem to want instant solutions without taking the time to learn the program.

When I started with Photoshop many years ago, I read the manual, I bought a book on Photoshop and read it cover to cover, I spent many days experimenting with the program and exploring the on-line documentation. Then and only then did I feel it was OK for me to start asking questions of others.

Yes… resize until you are happy.. however NEVER resize bigger than the original iof you can help it. That will most definately produce jagged pixilization around the copied image. Always use the original size or smaller.

If you have to make the image bigger, backup, make the background smaller and try again.

1300 x 1000 pixel images can end up being fairly small if what you are pasting onto them is small to begin with. A 6 mega pixel camera produces an image approximately 2000 x 3000 pixels. That’s about 6 times as many pixels as your image and that’s about the standard size of a point and shoot these days. Many are much larger.

Resolution is probably the culprit in your jagged edges.

Thanks for your response, but I never went any sizes bigger than the actual picture, so that isn’t the case here. I noticed after writing this about the jagged edges, that the view was not at 100%, I believe it was at 66% or something like that. Sorry for the confusion on this, I had been up all night working on this learning this extraction technique, and I didn’t at the time even think to look at that. I’m embarrassed to even write this, but since everyone here is nice enough to take the time and read these-I felt a response was appropriate, even if I blundered twice tonight on these posts, and while I hate making a fool of myself, like I have twice tonight, it’s not about saving face for me, I’d rather be honest.

The picture seems fine at 100% and I was under pressure to get this done. I hope you’ll all forgive my clumsiness tonight??

I wouldn’t feather before the cut. I’d cut and past to a new layer (with feathering set to 0), create a layer mask (crtl-click the new layer then click layer mask in the layers palette) and then use filter> blur> gaussian blur on the layer mask. then use image> adjustments> levels on the layer mask to fine tune the feathering. i find you have much more control that way.

One of my many bosses is touring all over Europe, and everyone emails from there-it was his idea to have people send in the concert pics-I guess that’s why I thought Europe, Yep-at least we get more sunshine than they do-Yaayyyy

That picture I did by extraction came out amazing, I still can’t believe I did it WooHoo!!!
