Hi, I am wondering if someone would give me some direction on this.

I purchased a website template and wanted to change the background color on one of the sections on the home page.

The website template company said that they would send the .PSD files. When I extracted the files, there was a .PSD file with the homepage assembled in layers. The images were in .jpg files.

I did not think .JPGs could be changed – I thought that in order to change the background color I would need access to the image in a .PSD.

Can I change the image colors in a .jpg? OR, if I make any changes to the layers in the .PSD that does not comply with the XHTML and CSS files.

Any advice?

(I have a support ticket into the store I purchased the template but would be surprised to get any help.)

An additional note – I expected the CSS file to contain the background colors but instead it assmbled .jpgs.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sheila,

I did not think .JPGs could be changed<<

JPGs can be edited just as can any image file, but re-saving as a JPG can have a deleterious effect upon image quality. Each time you edit and re-save as JPG, more compression artifacts are generated. The larger the area that is changed by the edit the more likely this is to be noticeable.

Having said that, it is quite possible that you will be able to make changes and no degradation will be visible.

It is unlikely that any changes you make to the PSD are going to adversely affect the final coding.

When you buy a template you get what the seller created. There are no rules. Nothing prevents you from changing the background color into CSS if you know how, and want to spend the time.
